The guy was probably watching the house right now. Mason hoped so. He hoped Kyle came to the door because Mason would teach him what rage really looked like. He’d snap the fucker’s neck.

“Next time, call me.” Mason took the tea from Elijah’s hand and set it aside. “I don’t mind taking you to see your grandmother. How is she doing?”

“Getting better,” Elijah said. “I didn’t call you because you have a business to run.”

Mason kissed Elijah’s forehead. “I’ll always make time for you. I hope you know that.”

Elijah smiled weakly. “I do now. I just… I was so damn scared.”

Mason wrapped his arms tightly around Elijah, anchoring him with a sense of security. “You don’t ever have to feel helpless again. I’m here for you, for you and your family. I don’t mind giving you rides or coming to your rescue.”

“Why?” Elijah looked up at him, but Mason noticed that his mate hadn’t pulled away. “Why are you doing all of this for me when we barely know each other?”

It was time to fess up. “We’re mates.”

Elijah pulled back. “What is that?”

Mason placed his hand over Elijah’s heart. “Do you feel a connection to me?”

“Yes.” Elijah frowned. “It’s weird, because I don’t really know you, but I do feel that connection.”

“Preternatural beings get one mate,” Mason said, leaving out the fact that they sometimes had two mates. “The moment we met I knew you were mine.”

Elijah stood and looked wide-eyed at Mason. “You’re saying we’re fated to be together?”

Mason stood, slowly approaching his mate, hoping like hell that Elijah didn’t run or tell him to get out. “Yes. Fate handpicked you for me, Elijah. It’s called the pull, that need to be near each other.”

His mate placed a hand over his forehead as he sat back down. “Things just keep getting weirder.”

Mason hunkered down in front of Elijah, taking his mate’s hands in his. “You’re mine. And since you’re mine, I won’t let anything happen to you. My only priority is to keep you safe and happy. There are other perks.”

“Like what?”

“You won’t get any diseases, like heart disease, cancer, and so on. I think fate made it that way so mates can live as long as we do.”

Elijah’s brows shot up. “That’s one hell of a perk.”

Mason chuckled.

“Exactly how old are you?” Elijah asked. “You look in your mid-thirties, maybe younger, since I suck at guessing someone’s age.”

“Two hundred and seventy-five.”

Elijah made a choking sound. “Are you freaking serious?”

“Yep.” Mason smiled at him. “You’ll age slowly, like me.”

Elijah swallowed. “I think I need a drink.”

Chapter Five

Elijah had just discovered the fountain of youth. How freaky was that? Taking care of elderly relatives made him always think of how, one day, he would end up just like them, and he hadn’t looked forward to that. When his granddad moved, you could hear his joints popping. He had a bad back, bad knees, and, at times, was senile.

He’d seen his granddad without a shirt, and although he’d once been lean with muscles—Elijah had seen plenty of pictures of him in his youth and he’d been a handsome guy—his chest looked flabby, and his skin looked as if it didn’t fit properly.

No one looked forward to growing old and falling apart, and Elijah was no exception.

“Anything else?”
