Things could be worse. Things could always be worse.

Elijah frowned when someone knocked on the door. If it was Kyle, Elijah was going to kick him in the jewels. Sometimes the guy didn’t know when to leave things alone.

With an attitude, Elijah opened the door, ready to tell Kyle off, only to find Tido, Drake, and Gage standing on the other side.

“What’re you guys doing here?”

Gage held up two boxes of pizza. “Since you can’t come out, we thought we’d come to you.”

Drake held up a plastic bag. “I got drinks.”

Which meant he had sodas.

“And I have two bad movies to watch.” Tido waved two DVD cases at him. “Let’s get this party started,” he whispered, knowing Elijah’s grandparents were asleep.

“You guys are insane.” Elijah smiled as he stepped aside and let them in. “How much partying can we do when we have to keep our voices down and keep the volume of the TV low?”

Tido snickered. “Some of the best things are done in quiet.”

Drake shoved Tido. “I always knew you were a prude in bed.”

“I just don’t see the point in shouting,” Tido defended. “Quiet sex does not equal bad sex.”

“Tell that to your last two boyfriends,” Drake replied.

“That had nothing to do with sex,” Tido huffed. “Alan kept saying as soon as his mom died, he would inherit the house. That’s not a good trait. Craig kept trying to talk me into orgies.”

Neither sounded good to Elijah. He was more traditional, dating and having sex with only one guy. He also didn’t think a person should brag about how they were going to inherit a house after their mom died. How morbid.

“Maybe Alan finally got that house and you can date him again,” Gage teased. “Though you can never trust a guy who parts their hair to one side.”

Elijah reached up and mussed up his own hair to get rid of the part.

“I saw that.” Drake winked. “Your hair is different. It isn’t perfectly combed.”

“I wasn’t referring to you,” Gage said as he sat on the couch, setting the pizza boxes on the coffee table. “Whenever I bash a guy, and any of you have those qualities, ya’ll are excluded.”

Elijah went to the kitchen and grabbed some plates and glasses, along with some napkins. When he returned, he sat next to Gage, and Tido sat on Elijah’s other side.

Drake sat back in Granddad’s recliner. “So what did Douche want?”

“For me to ditch Grandma and Granddad and have fun with him this weekend.” Elijah was still steaming over Kyle’s visit.

“Ah.” Drake nodded. “He’s playing the hits.”

“Too bad dragons aren’t real,” Tido said. “One could swoop out of the sky and eat Kyle. Then again, I wouldn’t wish that on the dragon. Kyle might give it indigestion.”

Talking about dragons made Elijah think of what had happened two weeks ago at the diner. He was still trying to convince his brain that it had been real. His boss had turned into a snow leopard, and Elijah’s coworker, Julian, had been dating a wolf shifter who’d tried to kill him. Then Julian’s ex was killed, so the guy’s father had come to town and tried to kill Julian because of his son’s death.

The fight in the kitchen at the diner had been an insane mess, and Elijah was still reeling from it.

“Can I ask you guys something?” Elijah sat back, one slice of pizza on his plate. “Do you believe in supernatural things?”

“Like ghosts?” Drake asked.

“Vampires.” Gage nodded.

“Fairies, too,” Tido added.
