“Oh. Sorry. Come in.”

They walk in and look around. Jade whistles. “I didn’t think I’d ever see a house bigger than Carter and Reagan’s. I was wrong.”

“I love Carter and Reagan’s house. It’s the most unique, well-thought-out home I’ve ever seen in my life.” I much prefer theirs to mine.

Jade smiles proudly. “Collin designed and built it. It’s his dreamchild. Every inch.”

I look at Collin in a bit of shock. “Is that true?”

He humbly nods.

“You’re very talented. If you have a business card, leave it tonight.”

“I will.”

Jade asks, “Where’s my mother?”

“Just finishing up a shower. She’ll be down in aminute.”

Jade motions to Collin. “Take Andie to braid your hair. I need to have a little chat with Beckett.”

Collin holds out his hand and Andie happily takes it.

As soon as they disappear, she’s got her finger in my face. “This fucking sucks for my mom. You need to get your shit together and keep her out of the spotlight. She doesn’t deserve it.”

“I’m trying, Jade.”

“Why did you take her to the party in Rome? That started this mess.”

“It was at The Vatican. I wanted her to experience something special. It’s been so long since the paparazzi gave a shit about me. I wasn’t thinking. It was stupid.”

“She’s fucking clueless about all this.”

“I know.”

“Despite her shit life, she believes everyone is inherently good. She doesn’t understand that there will be people out there chomping at the bit to tear her down.”

“I know. It’s one of the things I love about her.”

Her eyes widen. “You love her?”

“Yes.”

“Does she love you?”

“She says she does.”

“Shit. Don’t fuck with her, Beckett. She’s had enough pain for ten lifetimes. If you hurt her, pierced dick or not, I’ll kick you so hard in the balls no amount of money will bring them back.”

I hear a laugh. I turn around and see Mom standing there with a huge smile. “I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me that Amanda has such a strong, fantastic daughter.” She holds out her hand. “I’m Glinda. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

She shakes Mom’s hand. “The good witch of the north? Nice to meet you too.”

“Your mother said the same thing to me when we met.”

“The genius doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

We hear a voice. “There’s my glowing girl.”
