“Is she okay?”

“Is who okay?”

“Amanda.”

“Why? What happened?” I can’t imagine Amanda called her after our fight last night.

“Have you been onlinethis morning?”

“No. Why?” What now? When will this end?

“Go to your computer. You need to see it.”

I hurry to my home office and power it on. “Which website?”

“Allof them. Everyone is running the story.”

I click on one that seems to be particularly interested in us. And then I see it. Oh my god. It’s an interview with a woman claiming to be Amanda’s mother.

“Fuck.” This is going to gut her.

“When did she last see her mother?”

“When she was three years old. She doesn’t remember her. This charlatan knows nothing about Amanda. She’s cashing in.”

“Trust me, Beckett, this one will cut her deep. I know firsthand. Make it go away. Do whatever it takes. I hope she’s upstairs still sleeping and doesn’t know anything about this yet.”

“Umm. I was a dick to her last night. She slept at her house.”

I hear her sigh in disappointment. “When will you learn? Go take care of things.”

“I will. Thanks. I think I’m going to take her away. She needs a break from all this.Weneed a break from it. The press won’t let up. It’s wearing on all of us.”

“That’s a good idea. I’ll come and stay with Andie.”

“I want to bring Andie. Why don’t you come too? I feel like she might need some motherly time with you.”

It’s silent.

“Mom, are you there?”

She croaks out, “I would love nothing more.”

“I’ll set it up and send you the information.”

I make a few necessary calls, get Andie off to school, and then head straight for Amanda’s house. I tried calling Jade, but she didn’t answer.

I practically jump out of the car before Nico stops and run to her front door and start banging on it.

Jade answers and looks at me with disgust. “Meeting you is the worst thing that ever happened to her.”

“Where is she?”

“I’m not letting you in. You’re the reason for all this.”

We hear Amanda’s voice. “Let him in. I need him.”

With a ton of attitude, Jade reluctantly steps aside so I can enter. I practically sprint past her and run to Amanda, lifting her and taking her in my arms. “I’m so sorry, baby.”
