I walk into my kitchen at breakfast time. Karen immediately sets out the coffee in the chair next to mine. “Is Amandacoming down?”

“She didn’t stay here last night.”

“Oh.”

“Her grandchild was born yesterday.”

Her eyes light up. “What did Jade have?”

“Umm. I don’t know. I’ll find out today.”

Karen looks confused. I don’t blame her. I should know. She knows me well enough at this point to know I fucked up.

I try to lighten the mood. Nodding to my juice on the counter, I say, “What’s in my juice today?”

For the first time ever, she answers. “Carrots, kale, celery, spinach, and regret.”

Okay then.

Fortunately, Andie comes running in, ending the awkwardness. “Where’s Amanda? She’s not in the studio.”

Does anyone care about me? The first question anyone asks in the morning is about Amanda.

“I wanted you to myself today.”

“Is she in the shower?”

“She’s not here.”

“Why not?”

“She’s with Jade. Jade and Collin had the baby.”

Andie screeches. “Oh my god. I bet it’s so cute. Is it a boy or a girl?”

“I don’t know.”

“Does it look like Jade or Collin?”

I shamefully admit, “I don’t know.”

“Can we go to the hospital to see it?”

“Not today. You have school.”

“What about when school is over?”

“We’ll see.”

She pouts. “Fine, grumpy bear. Tell me my joke.”

“What does one ocean say to the other ocean?”

She crosses her arms, still mad at me, like every other woman in my life. “I don’t know.”

“Nothing. They just waved.”

She scowls. “I don’t like it.”
