It’s going to be a long day.

After I drop Andie, I head over to Amanda’s. Nico opens the car door. He looks like he wants to punch me. “You should be crawling to her on your hands and knees, asshole.”

“Do your fucking job and none of this would happen, Nico.”

He stares at me with venom in his eyes.

I knock on the door. It takes a while, but she eventually answers looking like she just woke up. She’s in that fucking tight half-shirt that drives me wild.

Her sad eyes meet mine. “What do you want? I’m exhausted.”

“Can I come in?”

She thinks for a moment before opening the door wider in invitation. I walk inside.

“I’m sorry about yesterday.”

“You mean one of the most special, emotional days of my life? A day when I needed you by my side? What happened?”

“Did you see the article?”

She sighs. “I don’t control the bullshit that comes out about me.”

“Yes, I learned this morning that it wasn’t true.”

She holds her hand, out stopping my forward progress. “Wait a minute. Does that mean yesterday you thought itwastrue?”

I’m silent at first. Her shoulders slump and tears fill her eyes.

I shuffle nervously. “I know it was a tough time in your life. I’m sure it was hard to make ends meet. I thought maybe…”

“You thought I resorted to prostitution? Selling my body?”

“I…umm…”

“And then you ghosted me on one of the most important days of my life. When I needed you.”

My head is down in shame. I have no words.

“All this time together, and you don’t know me or trust me at all. Even if you weren’t sure about those horrible things, you could have asked me. I’ve only ever been truthful with you. I’ve never been dishonest. Not for a single second.”

I whisper, “I’m sorry.”

“You know what, that’s not enough. I deserve better.” She points to the door. “Get out. I can’t look at you right now.”

I nod as we start walking toward the door. I mumble, “Will you tell me what Jade had?”

“I have a grandson.”

“Congratulations. Andie wants to see him.”

She sighs. “Tell Andie’s school that I’ll pick her up at the end of the day.”

“I can bring her.”

“Let me be clear: I don’t want to be around you right now. I’ll take her to see the baby and give her dinner. I’ll drop her home afterward.”

“Will you stay over tonight?”
