I rub my face. “I didn’t see it. Not at all. I can’t trust anyone, even myself. What does that say about me?”

She sits on the side of my bed and takes my hand. “That you have a pure heart. That you want to believe the good in people. That before Jenny, you gave people the benefit of the doubt, despite a few of the other women using you for publicity.” She swallows. “Did you have actual confirmation that Jenny wasn’t as you thought?”

I nod.

“Shortly after she passed?”

I nod again. “How do you know?”

“I remember a shift in you. You went from sad to angry. I thought it was perhaps the stages of grief, but the anger and darkness were stronger than I had ever seen from you. That’s when you started showing up with bruises here and there. What is it that you do?”

“I fight.”

“Like a bar fight?”

“No. Underground boxing ring fighting.”

“You may legitimately be the dumbest smart person I know.”

I can’t help but smile. “Amanda said the same thing when she found out.”

“Because she’s legitimately smart.” She pauses. “And perfect for you. And in love with you, the real you. And she’s about to be the mother of your child. The exact kind of woman you want to be the mother of your child. Ofbothyour children.”

I run my fingers through my hair. “I don’t know if I can fix it. I fucked up really bad. I said some terrible things to her. We were already on edge. I was shitty to her a few weeks ago too.”

She sighs and shakes her head in frustration. Frustration with me. “You’ll never know unless you try. Get your ass up and go start begging for forgiveness.”

“Okay.”

“You need to fix yourself too. You can’t go on like this.”

I put my head down. “I know.”

“Time to clean up your mess. First, go downstairs and tell your daughter one of your ridiculous jokes.”

After bangingon her door for fifteen minutes, I realize her car isn’t in the driveway. I decide to head over to Jade’s and knock on her door.

Jade opens it holding Tyson in her arms. She looks at me with pure venom. “What the fuck did you do to my mother?”

“Where is she?”

“She took off.”

“What do you mean? Where did she go?”

“I don’t know. I was asleep when she came to say goodbye. Collin said she was upset and told him she needed time to herself. If my vagina didn’t feel like it was full of razor blades right now, I’d dropkick your sorry ass. Hasn’t she suffered enough in her life? She let her dignity be questioned in the public eye because she loves you. You’re a fucking idiot.”

“I know. Just tell me where she is.”

“I told you; I don’t know. I wouldn’t tell you if I did, but I genuinely don’t know.”

“Her cell was turned off. There’s no way she wouldn’t have left you a phone number.”

“Maybe I have one of those, but I’d sooner give birth again next week before giving it to you.”

I blow out a breath. I know Jade enough to know I won’t get her to crack. “Tell her…tell her that I’m sorry. Tell her I made a mistake. Tell her…tell her I love her.”

“You don’t deserve her.” She gives me the finger and slams the door in my face.
