“InGhost?”

“Yes.”

“No. What is it?”

“Their hands are all gooey in the clay, but as soon as they start kissing, their hands are clean all of a sudden.”

She stops and thinks for a brief moment. “Huh. I never noticed.”

“Movies are clean. They have the benefit of reshooting scenes when they mess up. And editing. They can edit things. Real life is messy. I’m messy.”

“I’ve noticed.”

I continue kissing her all over.

She whines, “Beckett, I’m trying to be strong. We can’t just sweep what happened under the rug.”

“I know we can’t, but I want to show you that I trust you and that you can trust me.”

“I know you do, but you can’t snap your fingers and make that happen. It takes time.”

“I don’t want to wait.”

She sighs in frustration.

I remove the paintbrush from her hand and turn her around, pulling her close to me.

“Beckett, I…”

I cover her mouth with my hand. “Let me speak.”

She nods and I remove my hand from her mouth.

“I fucked up. I did exactly what I told you not to do. I let the press get in my head. I lost sight of what was real and what wasn’t. I hate myself for it. I know we’re real. I know our love is real. I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.” I touch her stomach. “Our son was conceived out of so much love that my heart feels like it might burst. I thought Andie was conceived out of love, but now that I haveyou, I know she wasn’t. I know Jade wasn’t either. But our son was. No matter how I’ve fucked things up, our son has something that our other children don’t have.”

“I know. That exact beautiful thought was running through my mind two months ago when you sat in my kitchen and ruined it.”

“I’m going to fix that. Every single day for the rest of our lives I’m going to show you love and trust.”

I reach down and pick up the file. “I know trust is earned. I’m going to trust you with the most important thing in the world to me.”

I hand it to her. She opens it and begins reading. I see it in her eyes the moment she realizes what it is. They immediately fill with tears as she looks back up at me.

“You want me to adopt Andie?”

I take her hand and run it over my tattoo. “Yes. I trust you with my biggest treasure. We’ll protect her together. I want you to be her mother.”

Her tears begin spilling over, running down her face. “I…I don’t know what to say.”

“Do you want to be her mother?”

She sniffles. “More than anything.”

“Then it’s settled. Everything is filed. It just needs your signature to be finalized.”

“It’s already filed? When did you do this?”

I wipe her tears with my thumbs and stare into her beautiful face. “The day after you left.”
