“What makes you think you were imperfect? I think you’re perfect.”

“I have a natural, God-given ability to find the biggest losers on the planet and date them, thinking I can change them for the better. She witnessed the same routine over and over again. I think it’s damaged her relationships with men. She won’t get serious with anyone, and she has a thing for older men. I’m placing the latter part on Declan’s shoulders. His vacancy at the beginning of her life undoubtedly caused that.”

“Does she date?”

“You’ve seen my daughter.”

He smiles.

“She garners a lot of attention from men. She always has.”

He lets out a laugh. “I bet.”

“She’s looked like this since about fifteen and uses it as a weapon. She unapologetically moves from man to man, though I think she’s secretly dating someone right now. I’m pretty sure she’s going to Mexico with him next week.”

“That’s promising.”

“Depends on who the man is, but I’m happy that she’s possibly in a relationship. I think it will be good for her as long as he treats her well.”

“Do you really think Jade would tolerate a man not treating her well?”

Now it’s my turn to laugh. “Nope. She’s much stronger than me in that sense.”

He rubs my face. “Don’t sell yourself short. You’re a special woman. Despite always wanting me to date my entire life, I think you’re the first woman my mother has genuinely liked. She’s quite smitten with you.”

“What about Jenny?”

He shakes his head. “She was happy that I was happy, but they weren’t close. Jenny spoke with her mom for hours every day. She didn’t make room for my mom in her life.”

“It was her loss. Your mom is incredible.”

“Agree.”

“Does it still hurt? Losing her?”

“It hurts, but not for the reasons you think. I mostly just hurt for Andie having to grow up without a mother.”

“What does that mean?”

He blows out a breath. “Nothing I care to discuss right now.”

I decide not to pry, but I’m surprised by his answer. “Okay.”

It’s dark and quiet for a while, though it’s clear neither of us are asleep.

Beckett whispers, “Are you still awake?”

“Yes.”

“Can I ask you something and you promise to give me an honest answer?”

“Always.”

“Did you really not know who I was the first night we met?”

“I honestly had no clue. I don’t waste time on social media or gossip sites. I Googled you when I got home and was in complete and total shock.”

“I love that.”
