Me: I think so. We’re doing a girls’ night. We’ve got some stuff to work through in the morning. I’ll let you know when I’ll be back.

Beckett: Whatever you need.

Me: I miss you.

Beckett: My bed is so empty without you in it. I keep smelling your pillow.

Me: I guess no sleepfucking for you tonight.

Beckett: I may have faked it the past two times. I just wanted an excuse to touch you.

Me: I know. I didn’t mind.

Beckett: One more week, cherry pie.

Me: Cherry pie?

Beckett: When I finally got a little sampling of you today, that’s what you tasted like. Cherry pie.

I quickly look over at Jade to see if she notices my cheeks flushing. She doesn’t.

Me: One more week. Good night.

Beckett: Sweet dreams, cherry pie.

When the movie is over, Jade starts toward her old bedroom but stops and looks around. “This house doesn’t look very lived in right now. I’m thinking that maybe I’m not the only one whose toes have been curling.”

I start toward my room without breaking stride. “Let’s deal with your love life and then we’ll get to mine.”

She lets out a laugh. “I’m just happy to hear you have one.”

Not yet, but maybe soon.

Declan and Melissaarrive first thing in the morning. Melissa suggests she and I go for a walk to get coffee so that Declan and Jade can be alone. I happily agree.

Melissa, being nearly as tall as Jade, looks down at me. “How was she last night? Yesterday was intense.”

“I think she’s in love with him, but this is new territory for her. She’s never let anyone in before.”

“Just remember that it’s new territory for Declan too. No one will ever be good enough for her in his eyes. Though misguided, it comes from a place of love.”

“I know.” I smile. “It’s amazing. Even all these years later, his temper hasn’t waned in the slightest. He’s exactly as hotheaded as he was back in the day.”

She laughs. “I have no doubt. What about you? Have you dipped your feet in the dating pool yet?”

I’m silent.

Her eyes widen. “You’ve met someone.” It’s not a question. It’s a statement.

“I’m not sure what we are. I’m definitely not ready to talk about it. The situation is a little odd.”

“Say no more. Whenever you’re ready.”

We enjoy our coffee. When we return, Declan says they found some common ground. Jade is in her room talking with Dr. Pearl. That reminds me, I’m overdue for a session. She has no idea what’s been going on with me.

Declan and Melissa leave, and when Jade surfaces she says she isn’t ready to go home. I’m obviously not leaving her. I text Beckett that I won’t be back today but will return tomorrow.
