She ends the call and sits up. “Jade and Collin are at the hospital. Both Reagan and Skylar are in labor. Carter and Lance were out of town, so Collin and Jade were in the delivery room helping. Apparently Jade passed out. Collin sounds frantic. He said they won’t tell him anything because he’s not her husband. I need to head down there.”
“I’ll drive you.”
“No, you go back to sleep. You need to be here for Andie when she wakes in the morning.”
I sit up. “No, I want to be there for you. Mom is here with Andie. She’ll be fine.”
“How will I even explain your presence?”
“I don’t really care, but I’ll wait in the lobby if you prefer. I just want to be there for you. Let me.”
“Okay. We need to hurry though.”
We quickly get dressed and make our way to the hospital. When we walk in, a man I assume is Collin is waiting by the front door.
My first thought is that he’s older than I would have imagined for Jade. He must be close to forty. He’s got shoulder-length hair, is well built, and has worry written all over his face.
He introduces himself to Amanda, warmly hugging her, and then shakes my hand. “She’s still out cold. They said we can go in when you arrive. Declan is causing a whole shit storm up there.”
She sighs. “What else is new?” She turns to me. “You’ll wait here?”
“If that’s what you want.” It’s not what I want.
She nods and I sit. For nearly two hours, I sit and wait. I wish she’d let me be there for her. I’m going out of my mind.
She eventually walks back into the lobby looking completely dumbfounded.
I stand and quickly make my way to her. “Is everything okay?”
“I’m…umm…I’m going to be a grandmother. Jade and Collin are having a baby. She’s pregnant. Everyone is in a bit of shock.”
I smile and hug her. “Congratulations. How did Jade take it?”
“In typical Jade fashion. She cracked like six inappropriate jokes and then kicked me out of the room so she and Collin could take a shower together.”
I can’t help but laugh. “That sounds like Jade.”
“She just wants to get to Reagan and Skylar when they’re done, so I don’t need to be here.”
“Any word on them?”
“I don’t know. I wasn’t on the maternity floor.”
As we make our way to the car, she’s distant. I squeeze her hand. “Are youokay?”
“I’m just in shock. Even though I know my age, I don’t think I ever officially closed the door on me having more kids until just now.”
“You want more kids?”
“I’ve always wanted more. I just never met the person I wanted to have them with.” She looks away. “I guess that ship has sailed now. I suppose it’s time for my heart to catch up to Mother Nature.”
She’s a bit distant on the ride back to my place. The sun is just coming over the horizon as we pull in through the front gates.
When the car stops, she turns to me. “Thanks for coming with me.”
“My pleasure. Why don’t you run a bath for yourself, and I’ll make your morning coffee and bring it to you.”
She smiles. “Is this just an excuse so you can see me naked?”
