The saleslady looks tickled pink as she pours us three glasses of champagne. I guess drinking alcohol and trying on clothes is how the other half rolls. Target and JCPenney don’t offer these types of amenities, though maybe they should.
About eight dresses and three glasses in, we’re all giggling and having the best time. Glinda looks between meand Melissa. “You mean to tell me that Melissa is married to the father of your daughter, and you two are here shopping together?”
We nod.
“So you two are friendly even though you’ve had sex with the same man? And Melissa is now married to him?”
Melissa and I smile at each other. Glinda is wasted.
She bursts out laughing. “I love these modern families.” She looks at me. “It doesn’t bother you that your daughter spends time with Melissa?’
“Of course not. Melissa loves Jade and treats her like her own. Why would that upset me? I wouldn’t want her to have an evil stepmother. I love their relationship. And I haven’t been with Declan in well over two decades.”
Glinda sighs. “I don’t even remember what sex feels like. I miss it. The men in my community in Florida all have more nose and ear hair than hair on their heads.”
Melissa and I giggle. I can’t help but ask, “What about Nico? I sense something between you two.”
Glinda blushes. “Hmm. Can you imagine what it would be like to be with a man that big? I bet he’s bigeverywhere.”
Now it’s mine and Melissa’s turn to burst out laughing. We also look at each other in an unspoken acknowledgment that Declan is averybig boy. She doesn’t know that Beckett is too.
Melissa asks, “Who’s Nico?”
“Beckett’s bodyguard. He’s definitely sweet on Glinda. They flirt shamelessly.”
Glinda playfully smacks my hand. “We do not…well, maybe a little. But he doesn’t want to jeopardize his job. I understand that.”
I shout from the dressing room as I make my way in to try on another dress, “Glinda, Beckett wants you to be happy. You do everything for him and Andie. You deserve some fun too.”
I hear her breathe, “Maybe one day.”
I put on the latest dress and walk back out. They both gasp.
Melissa claps her hands together. “That’s the one.”
I look down. “You think?”
It’s a black and white snakeskin-looking dress with a deep plunging neckline. I’ve never owned or worn anything like this in my whole life.
They both nod. Glinda squeals in excitement. “Beckett won’t be able to keep his hands off you.”
Melissa and I giggle again.
We have one more glass each while they wrap my dress. I thank Melissa as she leaves. I drag Glinda to a store before getting into the Uber with her to make sure she gets home safely.
BECKETT
I’m working from home today and Andie is still at school. My mother and Amanda come stumbling into the house at two in the afternoon.
They’re giggling and falling all over each other. I think Amanda is practically carrying Mom along with what looks like a small, wrapped painting and what I assume is her new dress in an opaque cover so I can’t see it.
They’re laughing uncontrollably. I love theirrelationship. Though Mom looks a little unsteady. Amanda does too, to a lesser extent.
“Are you two drunk?”
Mom nods. “Amanda and Melissa gave me lots of champagne and it’s made me horny. Is Nico around?”
Amanda silently laughs. I nearly fall over in shock at my mother speaking like this. I’ve never once heard her talk this way. I’m officially disgusted.
