He’d just placed Miles’s trainers in one of the dryers in the utility area when the back door opened.

“Whoa, this storm is something else!” A redhead with her hair in a ponytail came in, shook out her umbrella, and shrugged out of her raincoat. She was wearing a dark blue veterinary nurse uniform beneath it and had a badge with her name pinned to her chest.

Logan swallowed a curse. “I wasn’t expecting you until later.”

Lucy Whitlock was the biggest gossip in the practice and quite likely the entire town. In the month since he’d officially taken over his uncle’s clinic, Logan had learned more than he needed to know about the private lives of his employees, as well as those of several people of interest in Twilight Falls.

“I had some paperwork to take care of.” Lucy arched an eyebrow. “Besides, your eleven thirty appointment is Lola. She’s the biggest Neapolitan Mastiff this side of the San Bernardino Mountains. The last time she came in for a check-up, three of us practically had to sit on her.”

Logan’s mouth pressed to a thin line. “I’m sure I can convince Lola to co-operate.”

Lucy made a face. “Look, I’m not gonna deny that you’re a tall glass of awesomeness, but Lola is a dog, not a human. You can’t charm the pants off her.”

“Ha-ha,” Logan grumbled.

“What’s got you so antsy?” Lucy said, puzzled.

A yip came from the direction of the prep room.

“Oh.” Her gaze shifted to the hallway. “You got company?”

Logan sighed. There was no avoiding the inevitable. “Yeah.”

Lucy trailed in his steps as he exited the utility area.

Miles had come out of the kitchen and was keeping the dogs company.

Lucy stared. Curiosity burned brightly on her face as she glanced at Logan.

Logan reluctantly made the introductions.

“Miles, this is Lucy Whitlock, the senior nurse at the clinic. She’s also my practice manager. Lucy, this is Miles Martinez.”

Lucy’s eyes rounded. She sucked in air and pressed her hands to her mouth. “You’re one of the Terrible Seven!”

Miles looked like he wanted to sink into the ground.

Logan lowered his brows at his practice manager.

Lucy’s expression turned sheepish. “I’m sorry,” she told Miles apologetically. “I couldn’t help it. You guys are practically royalty in this town.”

“It’s alright.” Miles grimaced and rubbed the back of his neck. “Don’t let Hunter hear you say that. It will only inflate his already swollen ego.”

Lucy grinned. “I hear Twilight Falls’ notorious bad boy has been thoroughly tamed by his fiancé.”

“It’s more like Hunter is a grouchy lion and Theo is a circus ringmaster,” Miles grunted. “How he managed to domesticate that beast is beyond me.”

Lucy burst out laughing.

Logan shot an intrigued look at Miles from under his lashes. His uncle hadn’t been the only one who’d mentioned the Terrible Seven. Lucy had delighted in telling him tales of Twilight Falls’ most famous locals and their better halves, among them a movie star, an internationally renowned artist, a Michelin-star pastry chef, and a rockstar. According to Lucy, they were all hot as hell and made men and women swoon wherever they went.

From Miles’s reaction, he didn’t like being labeled with the same brush.

Lucy eyed the puppy playing with Pepper. “Is he yours?”

Miles hesitated. “I found him on the side of the road this morning.”

Lucy’s face fell. “Oh. That’s a shame. He’ll have to go to the shelter.” She chewed her lip. “I’ll make some posters and see if anyone wants to adopt him.”
