He was attracted to Logan too.

CHAPTER6

Miles threwthe ball across the backyard. The puppy yipped and bolted through the freshly cut grass. He snatched the toy where it’d landed and returned to Miles, ears flopping and tail swinging so fast it practically blurred.

“Good boy, Blue.” Miles squatted and scratched the puppy under the chin when he dropped the ball at his feet.

Blue made a happy sound. He dropped down onto the grass, his tongue lolling as he panted.

Miles gave him his bowl of water and sat beside him.

He raised his face to the blazing sun and the clear, blue sky.

It was Saturday morning. The last of the storm that had swept through the valley a week ago had finally cleared. Not that Miles had taken much notice of the weather. He’d been too busy buying things for Blue at the pet stores Lucy had recommended and house training the puppy.

Miles had told Wyatt and Izzy about the dog yesterday. They were planning to drop by in the afternoon to meet Blue.

Knowing Izzy, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole gang turns up.

His chest tightened as he thought of Logan. The vet had been in surgery when he’d gone to the practice on Monday to drop off the clothes he’d borrowed from him. Lucy had come out to greet Miles instead and promised to pass on his thanks.

Miles drew his legs up and rested his folded arms atop his knees, the disappointment he’d felt at the time echoing keenly through him.

He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Logan.

I want to see him again.

It was strange how much he missed the man considering he didn’t even know he existed a week ago.

Miles’s stomach knotted. He couldn’t deny that he found Logan attractive. But it wasn’t just Logan’s looks that had captured his interest.

There was a quiet strength and confidence to Logan that Miles really liked.

Blue yipped and jumped on him. Miles laughed as the puppy tried to tackle him to the ground. He played with him for a while longer and was about to go in and start on lunch when the low rumble of an engine came from the road.

Blue’s ears pricked up. Miles stilled.

It’s too early for Wyatt and Izzy to be here.

His house was around a bend, at the end of a cul-de-sac that gave way to woodland. The only property close by was the Beattys’ old place.

A door slammed somewhere out front.

A man’s faint voice reached him.

Miles frowned faintly. He climbed to his feet with Blue in his arms and walked around the side of the house, curious as to the source of the commotion.

A pickup with a removal trailer was parked in front of the Beattys’ old home. Miles stared.

The new neighbor must be here.

A familiar woof had him pulling up short.

Miles’s gaze swung to the truck. His eyes widened.

Blue yipped and wriggled excitedly in his hold.

Pepper sat in the passenger seat of the vehicle. She propped her paws on the edge of the open window and woofed again, head bobbing and tail wagging.
