“Miles?”

Miles’s shocked gaze swiveled to the startled man who’d just appeared from behind the trailer. His pulse spiked.

“Lo—Logan?!” he stammered.

“You live here?” Logan’s surprised gaze moved past Miles.

“Yes.” Miles’s pulse fluttered as he crossed his front yard and headed across the road.

“Well, I’ll be damned.” Logan smiled wryly. “I never thought in a million years we’d end up being neighbors.”

Miles swallowed. “You bought the Beattys’ place?”

“Yeah.” Logan turned to look at the property. “It came on the market at the perfect time. My realtor warned me it would get snatched up fast so I made certain to put in an offer on the day it went up for sale.”

A thrill coursed through Miles. He couldn’t believe Logan was going to live opposite him. He glanced at the trailer.

“Do you need a hand?”

Logan hesitated. “I wouldn’t mind some help, but only if you don’t have other plans.”

“I don’t. My plans today consisted of playing with Blue and entertaining some friends.”

Logan’s mouth curved in a grin that made Miles’s breath catch. “So you finally gave him a name, huh?”

“Yes.” Miles ducked his head, his cheeks warming.

Logan came over and scratched Blue’s head. “You can leave him with Pepper. She’ll make sure he doesn’t wander far.”

Miles’s skin prickled at Logan’s closeness and his body heat.

Logan let Pepper out of the pickup and guided her into their new backyard. Blue whined excitedly when Miles put him down next to the hound. The dogs ran playfully through the grass.

Logan and Miles walked back around to the front.

“Is that all you have?” Miles indicated the trailer.

“Yeah.” Logan undid the lock on the doors and pulled them open. “It’s mostly boxes. I only brought a few pieces of furniture with me when I moved here from Sacramento.” He smiled wryly. “I wanted to make a fresh start.”

Miles looked curiously at Logan as he grabbed a carton. “Did you sell the rest of your things?”

“Not quite,” Logan replied lightly. “My ex-wife bought me out and kept most of our furniture. I rented a place after we got divorced.”

“Oh.” A sinking feeling formed in the pit of Miles’s stomach.

Logan took a box and led the way up the porch, oblivious to his dismay.

Miles was glad Logan couldn’t see his face as he followed.

He’d wondered if the sizzle of attraction he’d felt between them the day they’d met had been a fluke. Now that he knew Logan used to be married to a woman, there was no point asking himself that question anymore.

He’s obviously not into guys.

Miles took a shallow breath and headed into the house after Logan, determined not to let his chagrin show. The interior was cleaner than he’d thought it would be.

“I hired a company to spruce up the place,” Logan explained as his surprised expression. “Just leave the boxes in the dining room. I’ll go through them afterward.”

It was early afternoon by the time they finished unloading the trailer. Perspiration beaded Miles’s forehead where he sat on the porch step. They’d just finished moving the sofa bed Logan had brought into the living room.
