It felt good to be physically active.

Miles realized he’d been at risk of spending yet another weekend idling his time away.

I need to decide what I want to do with my life.

Though the psychologist he’d been seeing since he’d woken up from his coma had warned him he shouldn’t make any life changing decisions until next year, Miles knew sitting at home doing nothing was going to drive him crazy. And he would fall even further behind his friends.

He thought of the college brochures he’d ordered a couple of weeks ago. The ones currently sitting in unopened envelopes in his bedside drawer.

Seeing how hard Logan had worked to move to another town to start a new life was the final push he needed to get over his crippling indecisiveness.

Logan came out of the house, oblivious to the thoughts swirling through Miles’s mind and his fresh conviction. “I think all that hard work deserves a beer.”

Miles put away his concerns and arched an eyebrow. “You have beer?”

Logan grinned. He went over to his pickup and returned with a cooler.

Miles smiled when the vet handed him a chilled bottle. “You came prepared.”

“Well, I thought I’d deserve a reward if I was going to be at this all afternoon.” Logan’s expression turned teasing. “Luckily, my handsome new neighbor decided to help me out.”

Miles’s ears grew warm. He looked away, not sure what to make of the compliment.

“I think this beer will go well with a pastrami sandwich.”

Logan looked impressed. “You have pastrami sandwiches?”

Miles laughed. “I was going to make lunch for me and Blue. Why don’t you and Pepper come over?”

Logan’s face softened. “I won’t say no to that.”

CHAPTER7

Miles’s belly flip-flopped.He rose to his feet and swallowed.

Dammit. I need to come to my senses. Logan isn’t interested in me.

Logan locked up and fetched the dogs before following Miles across the road. Miles couldn’t help feel self-conscious when Logan entered the hallway of his home.

“Do you live here alone?” Logan asked quizzically.

“No.” Miles headed for the kitchen. “My mom’s on a cruise. It’s her first holiday in…well, in a while.”

He wondered if Lucy had told Logan about his circumstances. Considering how much she seemed to know about the Terrible Seven, there was a good chance she’d mentioned the accident and his coma.

Miles removed the container of fresh rice, chicken, and vegetables he’d made for Blue the night before from the refrigerator and warmed it up in the microwave.

“That’s way fancier than the food Pepper gets most days,” Logan drawled.

Pepper woofed in agreement. She plopped her bottom down next to Blue and his feeding station. Miles got a second bowl out for the hound while Logan topped up the dogs’ water.

Logan leaned against the counter and sipped his beer as he watched Miles prepare their sandwiches.

“Lucy said you’d dropped by. Thanks for bringing the clothes back.”

“It was the least I could do,” Miles murmured.

Though his heartbeat sounded loud in his ears, he did his best to appear composed. Considering Logan’s gaze felt like it was scorching him, he thought he was doing a pretty good job.
