“Good morning. You ready?”

Pepper let out a friendly woof by Logan’s feet.

Miles’s chest loosened. All it took was one look at Logan’s beautiful eyes to allay his fears.

He’s not the kind of person who’ll lead me on or deliberately hurt me.

Miles wasn’t sure how he knew this. He just…did. The tension oozed out of him. His mouth relaxed in a smile. “Yeah. Let me get Blue’s lead.”

The puppy sniffed curiously at the leash when Miles attached it to his new harness. He soon forgot about it and dashed out onto the porch to say hello to Pepper.

“Did you have fun with your friends yesterday?” Logan asked as they headed down the steps.

His question made Miles recall exactly what kind of fun he’d had by himself last night and that very morning in the privacy of his bedroom.

“Miles?” Logan said. “You okay?”

Miles flushed at his curious look. “Sorry, my mind was elsewhere. I did, thank you.” He paused. “They kept asking me about you after you left.”

Logan raised an eyebrow as they started into a low jog. “They did?”

“Yeah.” Miles pressed his lips together.

Between Izzy and Hunter’s nosiness and Drake and Alex’s fatherly attitudes, he’d felt like dinging his friends’ ears.

Logan grinned at his expression. “Don’t be too hard on them. They’re just looking out for you.”

His smile made Miles’s pulse flutter.

“I know. But I wish they would stop treating me as if I’m going to break.” The confession left his mouth before he could stop himself, startling him.

Logan cast a thoughtful look his way as they began pounding the pavement in earnest. “Have you told them that?”

Miles swallowed and shook his head. “It would only hurt their feelings.”

Logan was quiet for a while.

“I can see why they’re acting the way they are,” he said finally. “It must have been hard for them these past twelve years.” He glanced at Miles. “They’re your best friends, Miles. Not only did they walk out of the accident that put you into a coma, they couldn’t help you when you needed them the most. That guilt must have eaten at them every day.”

Miles’s stomach fell at Logan’s words. He looked dazedly at the path.

He’d been so wrapped up in his own thoughts and feelings these past two months, he’d barely tried to see things from the point of view of the people who cherished him.

Have I truly put myself in their shoes since I woke up?Miles clenched his jaw.And would I have acted any differently if it had been one of them who’d been asleep all this time? If it had been—?He swallowed convulsively. If it had been Drake?

“I’m sorry.” Logan slowed and stopped. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”

Miles halted in his tracks, conscious his emotions had been on full display for Logan to read.

“No.” He forced himself to meet Logan’s gaze. “You’re right. I—” Miles paused and ran a hand through his hair, frustration churning his stomach. “I’m not the greatest when it comes to talking to people. It’s probably why my friends always babied me.”

“I bet you were a cute baby,” Logan said drily.

Miles blinked. Logan’s mouth curved in a teasing smile.

Miles’s heart lightened. It surprised him how easily Logan could make him forget his worries.

Blue sneezed where he and Pepper were investigating some bushes. Miles guided the curious puppy back onto the curb. He and Logan started running again.
