Izzy startledwhen Logan appeared on the porch. “Oh.”

“Hey.” Logan walked over and handed her a blanket.

Izzy hesitated before accepting it. “Thanks.” She wrapped it around her shoulders where she stood at the railing.

Logan did the same and followed her gaze to the soft lights in the distance.

“I’m sorry,” Izzy said after a short silence.

“For what?”

Izzy sighed and hung her head. She turned and leaned her back against the banister. “I’m aware I’ve been acting like a bitch.” She wrinkled her nose at him. “Just so you know, it isn’t personal. I’ll be back to my normal, cheery self soon.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” Logan said quietly.

He hesitated.Might as well go for broke.

“Why did you never tell him that you liked him?”

Izzy’s eyes flared at his question. She bit her lip. “Was it that obvious?” she mumbled.

“Not really.” Logan shrugged. “I’m just good at reading people.”

Izzy took a shallow breath and closed her eyes briefly. “I’ve liked Miles since I was in high school.” She twisted around and stared blindly at the distant town lights. “He came out of the closet the same year I realized I had the biggest crush on him. There wasn’t much point saying anything after that.”

“You still like him,” Logan stated, matter-of-fact.

Izzy grimaced. “To be honest, I’m pretty sure I’m just crushing hard.” Her expression turned haunted. “I held on to a stupid dream after the accident.” Her voice trembled slightly. “For some reason, I thought he’d wake up one day and, well…see me. Not Izzy, the little girl who followed him around when she was a kid, but Izzy, the grown woman who desired him.” Her eyes glittered as she glanced at Logan. “Isn’t that utterly foolish?”

Logan faltered before patting her back softly. “To be honest, it’s not the dumbest thing I’ve heard lately.”

“Thanks, I think.” Izzy sniffed and leaned her head on his shoulder. “So, have you guys had sex yet?”

Logan choked on a snort. “Umm, no.”

“Why not?” She squinted at him. “Do you have a performance issue?”

Logan chuckled. “I’m not impotent if that’s what you’re worried about.” He gazed out into the night and smiled wistfully before meeting her curious stare. “It’s because I want to make all of Miles’s firsts perfect.”

Izzy stared at him like he’d grown another head. “Dammit,” she said, annoyed. “You make it really hard to hate you, Logan Prescott, you know that?”

Logan grinned. “I’m sorry to disappoint.”

Izzy rolled her eyes. “Just make sure you prep Miles well before you stick your loaded gun in him. I’d hate to see him all hunched up and shuffling like an old man after you do the dirty deed.”

Logan burst out laughing. Izzy smiled.

* * *

Miles’s heartthumped violently against his chest. He stepped silently away from the door.

Izzy—Izzy likes me?!

He headed into the rest room in a daze, only to flinch when he saw himself in the mirror above the sink.

He looked flushed, like he had a fever.

Miles opened the faucet and splashed cold water on his face, his mind spinning from what he’d just heard. One thing kept resonating through his mind.
