Logan squeezed his arms around him where they sat on the floor next to the fire, their backs against a couch. “So am I.”

His cell vibrated.

Logan frowned and checked the caller ID before answering. “Lucy? What’s wrong?” His face tightened as he listened.

Unease coiled inside Miles. His heart sank at Logan’s next words.

“Alright, I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Logan said stiffly.

“Logan?” Miles murmured after he disconnected.

Logan met his worried gaze. “A dog fell through the ice. Her owner just called Lucy. They’re on their way to the practice.”

Miles’s stomach plummeted. He glanced outside. “You’re going there in this storm?”

“He’s right.” Izzy furrowed her brow. “I doubt the town has had time to plow the mountain roads. They’ll be treacherous.”

Logan kissed Miles’s temple. “I’ll be careful.”

Finn rose to his feet. “I have snow chains that’ll fit your pickup.”

“I’ll help you guys put them on,” Drake said.

Miles watched worriedly from the doorway as Finn and Drake kitted Logan’s tires with the chains, the snow coming down so hard it piled on their heads and coats within minutes.

Logan got in and waved at Miles as he reversed. “I’ll be back soon.”

“Call me when you get to the practice!” Miles shouted.

Logan nodded and closed the window.

Pepper whined anxiously by Miles’s feet. Miles picked the hound up and hugged her to his chest as they watched Logan drive off.

Miles was in the kitchen when his cell rang an hour later.

He almost dropped his phone as he yanked it out of his pocket.

“There, you see,” Izzy said with a smile. She placed a coffee in front of him. “He got there okay.”

Miles recognized Logan’s practice number. He took the call, his hand trembling with the relief surging through him.

But it wasn’t Logan who’d called.

“Miles?”

Miles stiffened. “Lucy?”

“I’m at the practice. Is Logan still with you?”

Acid burned the back of Miles’s throat. “He left an hour ago.”

Lucy inhaled sharply. “But he’s—he’s not here!”

“Miles?” Izzy was staring at him anxiously. “What’s wrong? You’ve gone as white as a sheet.”

Blood pounded in Miles’s head, the fear clutching his heart so fierce he felt like he was dying. Lucy’s panicked voice echoed from the phone speaker as his hand fell limply on his lap. He stared blindly at Izzy.

“Logan hasn’t reached the practice,” he whispered numbly.
