Miles answered on the first ring. “Izzy? Is everything okay?!”

Air whooshed out of Logan at Miles’s voice.

He sounds terrified.

“It’s me,” Logan whispered.

Miles drew a sharp breath.

“I’m okay, Miles. So please, let me see you,” Logan begged softly.

“I—” A sob left Miles. “I can’t. I’m—I’m too scared.”

Logan took a shaky breath. “What are you scared of, Miles?”

“That you’ll disappear right before me. That you’ll—that you’ll die!”

Logan squeezed his eyes shut, his stomach in knots. “Iwilldie one day, Miles.”

A tortured sound left Miles.

“But I hope it will be a long, long time from now,” Logan continued, determination strengthening his voice. “I have a whole lifetime to spend with you first, Miles Martinez. A lifetime of good mornings and goodnights. Of kisses and making love. Of fighting and making up.” A shudder shook him. “A lifetime being grateful that I found you. I love you, Miles.”

Miles’s crying echoed in Logan’s ear.

Izzy sniffed and blubbered. Alex passed her a tissue, his own eyes glittering. Drake patted their backs.

But whatever Logan said to Miles and however much he pleaded with him, he refused to come see Logan. Logan’s heart weighed heavily in his chest when he was discharged from the hospital the next afternoon, the doctor leaving him with strict instructions to convalesce for the next two weeks.

Lucy had called that morning. She’d rebooked all his routine appointments and referred the urgent surgeries they’d planned to do to other vets on their roster.

Tristan and Wyatt were waiting for Logan when he came out of the main entrance. They’d arranged to take him home.

“I’m sorry about Miles,” Wyatt muttered as he climbed in the driver’s seat of his SUV.

“There’s no need to apologize, Wyatt.” Logan sighed where he sat in the backseat. “If anything, I should be thanking you guys. I’m pretty sure you saved that old couple. They would have died from hypothermia if you hadn’t found us.” He grimaced. “And I’d probably be much worse off.”

The daughter of the man and woman who had crashed into Logan had visited and apologized profusely on behalf of her bedridden parents stuck on another ward in the building. She’d banned them from driving their car when the weather was bad, but they’d insisted on going to see an old friend of theirs on Christmas Day. She promised to get their insurance company to process the paperwork related to the incident as quickly as possible before she left.

Tristan’s voice jolted Logan out of his glum thoughts.

“Miles was the one stuck inside a pickup when we had our accident. It was…pretty damn horrible to watch.” He met Logan’s stare in the rearview mirror as Wyatt drove out of the hospital parking lot. “We were there for one another then. We’ll be here for you and Miles.”

Logan’s chest tightened with emotion.

Miles’s place was dark when Wyatt pulled up outside Logan’s house.

“He’s staying with Drake and Roman,” Tristan explained at his crestfallen expression.

“Oh.” Logan couldn’t stop his stomach from sinking. He’d been hoping to go over and confront Miles. He was certain Miles would come around if they saw one other.

I want to touch him and kiss him so bad.

“Don’t worry.” Lines wrinkled Wyatt’s brow. “Reinforcements will be here soon.”

Logan stared. “What do you mean?”

Wyatt and Tristan exchanged a secretive look.
