“No. I’m not sure how long he was out there.”

The puppy whimpered, ears and tail drooping. He stared sorrowfully at Miles from the vet’s arms, his miserable gaze accusing him of abandoning him. Miles’s heart twisted.

A low woof had both he and the puppy freezing.

Miles looked down. He hadn’t noticed the Basset Hound sitting quietly by Logan.

“Her name’s Pepper,” Logan said without looking up. He finished inspecting the injured puppy’s leg and scratched him between the ears. The dog closed his eyes and slowly wagged his tail. “This cut should heal fine once it’s cleaned and glued.” His mouth curved when he met Miles’s gaze. “He’s in pretty good shape otherwise. He’s lucky you found him. I suspect whoever abandoned him did it this morning.”

Miles’s stomach flip-flopped again at Logan’s smile.

“That’s—that’s great,” he practically squeaked.

Miles swallowed a groan.

What is wrong with me?!

If Logan noticed his nervousness, he didn’t say anything. He guided Miles inside the practice and led him to a staircase at the back of the building.

“The apartment’s at the top, on the left. It’s pretty small so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding anything.” Logan fished a key out of his jeans and dropped it in Miles’s hand. “Towels are in the bathroom. You’ll find T-shirts and jogging bottoms in the dresser.”

Miles curled his fingers over the metal. It was warm from Logan’s body heat.

“I feel like I’m imposing,” he said, contrite.

“And I’m pretty sure you’ll catch a cold if you stay in those clothes,” Logan countered adamantly. “So how about you save me the guilt trip and go change into something dry?”

“Okay,” Miles murmured. “Thanks.”

He took the stairs, conscious of Logan’s gaze on his back.

The apartment was warm and cozy. Miles’s gaze skimmed the double bed on the other side of the living area.

It felt strangely intimate being in another man’s bedroom.

Or anyone’s bedroom for that matter.

He headed into the bathroom, his chest tight and his face warm.

Miles looked longingly at the shower before kicking off his socks and shoes and reaching for the bottom of his T-shirt. He was shrugging it off his shoulders when a knock came at the bathroom door. Miles startled.

He’d left it ajar.

“Er, come in.”

The door swung open.

“I forgot to say, feel free to have a shower if you—” Logan stilled, one foot inside the room. His eyes widened at the sight of Miles. A strange expression flitted across his face. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to walk in on you. I was just going to say you should warm yourself up with a hot shower before you get into dry clothes.”

Miles clutched his T-shirt to his chest, his pulse racing and his mouth inexplicably dry. “Thank you. I—I’ll take you up on that offer.” His tongue darted out to lick his lower lip.

Logan’s gaze locked on his mouth.

Miles held his breath when the air between them sparked.

Logan clenched his jaw and dipped his head curtly before disappearing, his posture strangely stiff.

Miles waited until he heard the apartment door close before releasing the breath he’d been holding.
