“He didn’t feel that he had a choice. Lucifer intended to torture him for eternity, but a band of demons that had supported the revolution helped him escape.”

“And Kane chose to flee to Fairhaven.”

“It’s not the kind of place Lucifer would ever think to look. Lucifer vowed to track Kane to the end of time, which is one of the reasons Kane keeps a low profile.”

“You call those custom suits and fancy car keeping a low profile?” I laughed. “Okay.”

“You should see his true demon form.”

“I’ve seen his blackbird, his flaming sword, and his monster form. What else is there?”

Dan grimaced and shook his head. I didn’t want to know. Got it.

“And he hasn’t tried to stage another coup since then?”

Dan lowered his gaze to his empty glass. “I don’t think it’s a job he wanted unless he could save lost souls, which required a change in Hell’s entire infrastructure. The betrayal cut deep. Kane felt that all his efforts had been in vain.”

“And where were you during all this, Dantalion, Great Duke of Hell?”

Dan met my gaze. “I’m the one who orchestrated his escape.”

The great duke just blew my mind. “I thought you were still in the business of torment.”

“A necessary lie. Kane and I are no longer welcome in Hell.”

Naturally, Kane chose this moment to emerge from his quarters. His gaze briefly met mine, and he continued to the counter as though I wasn’t here.

“I need to prep for opening,” he said.

“Josie can do that,” Dan said.

“Josephine is my head of security. She has different matters to attend to.”

Dan slid back his chair. “Then I’ll do it.”

My work here was done. I wasn’t going to get anything else from Dantalion now, and the sight of Kane was wreaking havoc on my interior world. I had to save myself if I intended to save Fairhaven.

“Thanks for your help, Dan. I appreciate your input—on everything.”

Dan shot a reluctant glance at Kane. “Anytime.”

I got up and left without a backward glance.

CHAPTER 13

My stronger wardcouldn’t come too soon. I arrived at the Castle to find a tattooed woman on my front porch with her face pressed against the window.

I cleared my throat, causing her to jump. “Looking for something?”

She spun to face me. “You, of course. And here you are.”

“Here I am. What brings you here, Addison?”

“Leo told me about your amazing house. I was hoping for a peek inside.”

I walked past her and unlocked the door. “Sorry. My radiators are on the fritz. Not the best time to entertain company.”

“I won’t be any trouble. I’ll wear my coat.”
