“She’s new to the area. I saw her at Devil’s Playground, and she was cozying up to Officer Leo at Monk’s the next night. Claims to be up for a job in the city and is considering a move to Fairhaven if she gets it.”

West regarded me. “But you don’t believe her?”

“She’s got a vibe.”

“That’s pretty vague.”

I didn’t want to share my strange encounter with her. It felt like opening a door too wide. “You know the vibe you get from me, the one that tells you that you don’t want me here? That’s the vibe I get from her.”

The werewolf alpha seemed to take my description on board. “Okay, let’s say you’re right, and she’s shady.”

I stiffened. “I’m not shady.”

“You’re hiding something that I sense could endanger my pack. That makes you shady.”

“For someone who thinks I’m dangerous, you’re sure willing to invest time and energy into me.”

He shrugged. “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”

“Is that what we are to you? Enemies?”

West sighed. “Honestly, Lorelei. I don’t know anymore. You’ve confused me.”

“One of my specialties.”

“So, if this Addison is somehow connected to Veles and the seven deadly sins…”

“They’re not a band.”

He glowered at me.

“Sorry,” I said. “Please continue.”

“If she’s connected to all this chaos,” West said, “what do you propose we do about it?”

“I have Ray researching Addison’s tattoos. I think the symbols are significant. They might tell us who we’re dealing with.”

“Have you asked the chief to run a background check on her?”

“I don’t think the chief and I have that kind of relationship.”

“She was willing to run a background check on you. Why not Addison?”

“She ran a check on me because I bought the Castle. She wanted to make sure I wasn’t the lunatic I appeared to be.”

“The jury’s still out on that one,” he mumbled. Then more clearly, he said, “You mentioned Addison was hanging out with the new cop. That could be enough to encourage her.”

“Why me? You’ve known Chief Garcia much longer. Can’t you ask for a favor?” I wasn’t enthusiastic about requesting favors; in my experience, they ended up more trouble than they’re worth. Even my moat came at a steep cost.

West rubbed his stubbled jawline. “I guess I could.”

“Call her now. Maybe she’s in her office.”

He shot me a quizzical look. “Are you giving me an order?”

“Don’t get your alpha fur in a ball. I’m simply making a suggestion. That’s what happens during a collaboration. Sheesh, and here I thought you were supposed to be the democratic leader of the pack.”

“I am.”
