Brody turned to face Kane. “You must be the prince of hell I’ve heard so much about.”

“Not from me,” I said quickly.

“Perish the thought,” Kane murmured.

We divided Wild Acres into sections and separated into our groups.

“What if they’re not all in the forest?” Vaughn asked. “Should we start combing the streets?”

“We’ll cross that tightrope when we come to it,” I said.

Kane glanced at me. “Ready to channel your inner Artemis?”

“We’re not hunting,” I emphasized.

“You can still hunt something you don’t intend to kill.”

“As long as we’re clear on that.” Right now, I felt theweight of far more than my weapons on my shoulders. The safety of these animals felt like my responsibility.

“We’re clear,” he said, “at least on that issue.”

I ignored the passive aggressive comment. “I’ve spotted the wolf twice in this area,” I said. “I don’t know whether she’s tracking me, or if she’s laying low out here.”

“I thought you said they’re being controlled by Addison.”

“I think they are, but I don’t think they’re like remote control cars. Their every movement isn’t guided by an unseen hand. Only their influence.” I didn’t think the lion intended to walk around Fairhaven killing anyone. It was only when the right set of circumstances presented themselves that the collar was triggered.

I was first to spot the wolf tracks. I caught Kane’s eye and pointed.

Kane bent down to examine them. “They’re recent,” he said in a quiet voice.

A low growl alerted us to the wolf’s presence.

Slowly Kane turned to get a better look at the wolf. “That’s quite the evil eye.”

“Don’t look directly at it. I don’t know what effect it might have on you.”

I could try to use my powers the way I used them on the pig, but the wolf was far more likely to kill me before I got a good grip on her. She seemed angry at the world, not that I blamed her.

Kane kept his gaze on the growling wolf. “How do you want to play this?”

“How about your monster form? It might intimidate her into submission.”

He cut a quick glance at me. “You think I’m intimidating?”

I snorted. “You’re a ginormous creature with wings. Godzilla would find you intimidating.”

He grinned.

“It isn’t a compliment.”

“Are you sure? Because it sounded like one to me.”

I gestured to the wolf, who was now salivating and ready to kill us both out of pure frustration and impatience.

Kane removed his jacket with a flourish and hung it on a nearby branch. Then he unfastened his cufflinks and rolled up his sleeves.

“I’ve seen this routine before,” I said. “You might consider changing it up a bit.”
