“What?? How can they possibly tell us not to have sex? This is beginning to sound like Catholic school.”

“I guess they think sex is a distraction from the inner work we are doing. Maybe they also see it as an escape?”

“It’s the best escape I know of,” he says, with a wink, and my stomach flip-flops.

I’ve always been a sucker for a guy who winks. There’s something so sexy about it. And, I can’t help but feel turned on talking about sex with Spencer. Especially prohibited meditation retreat sex.

The waitress drops off our dinners of steak, a baked potato and steamed mixed veggies. We both order another beer and she scoots off to grab them for us. Digging into our food like voracious wolves, we act like we haven’t eaten in days.

“Well, it’s not a medium rare filet and a dry martini but I bet it’s better than what Northern Dharma is serving up tonight,” he says.

“So true. And how weird is it to sit with other people for a meal but not be able to talk to them? I don’t even know what to do with myself.”

“Agreed. It’s definitely awkward,” he says, swallowing a bite of steak. “Question for you about matchmaking…”

I look at him with interest.

“I know some matchmakers are known to have special skills they use for finding their clients their perfect match. Things like tarot card readings or interpreting personality tests. Do you do anything like that?” he asks.

I smile at him and hold my hand out flat on the table in front of us. He looks confused. “Give me your hand,” I say with authority.

He puts his large hand on top of mine. “I’ve been reading palms since I was in high school. Just for fun. After I started withAdore, I decided to study it more thoroughly so I could use it for matchmaking.”

I turn his hand over and begin studying his lines.

“This is your heart line,” I say, lightly touching the line that starts near his pinky and extends across the palm. “Yours is long. And it’s deep and straight which reflects a long-lasting and strong union. It also means you’re romantic, expressive and value true love.”

I notice Spencer has three vertical lines branching directly from his love line, which some say represents the children from that bond. I decide to leave that part out.

“That’s interesting. I’ve never had my palm read before.”

I look up from Spencer’s palm and realize he’s studying me, as if he’s seeing me for the first time. I blush.

“Clients think it’s fun. I’m not sure if they really believe the information I give them but, over the years of reading friends’ palms, I have come to believe it’s fairly accurate.”

I realize I’m still holding his hand in mine and it feels really good – warm and soft. It’s obvious that he’s never worked with his hands. I smile at him and then drop it reluctantly.

“Let me see your heart line,” he says, picking up my hand.

I feel a tingle up my spine at his touch. “Very similar to yours. Long and deep.”

He looks intently at my palm and gently traces the lines. Our gaze locks momentarily and I feel a pull toward him, like I want to kiss him. I hold back and give him a small smile instead.

We finish dinner and Spencer pulls up the app to request a ride back to Northern Dharma. While we wait, we have an elaborate discussion about how we’re going to sneak back in and we decide Spencer should stay at the end of the driveway until I successfully make it back inside. It’s going to be bad enough if we get caught but even worse if we get caughttogether.

White Camry Alex shows up quickly after we summon him. We slide into the back seat of the car and I’m now aware of how tight the fit is. Spencer’s a big guy and I’m tall for a woman and our legs are touching. I can smell his cologne, it’s a spicy, woodsy number that I’ve smelled before and I wonder what it would feel like to bury my nose in his neck and get a deeper whiff.

“What are you up to for the rest of the night?” Spencer asked, looking briefly at his watch. “It’s only 7:30 but it feels like it’s 11.”

“I’ve got a good book that I’m reading. I started it last night and couldn’t put it down.”

“Wait a minute! You’re breaking a rule…anotherone. I had no idea you were such a rule-breaker. What other rules are you planning on breaking?” he says, looking deeply into my eyes, lips slightly parted.

His question takes me off guard for a moment and I have an urge again to reach over and kiss those tempting lips.

“Umm, so, I didn’t realize that when I packed and made the mistake of bringing two new books plus my reader. I figured with no internet I’d have nothing better to do than to read. I mean, honestly, what do they expect us to do all night?” I blush lightly, thinking about the “no sex” conversation yet again.

“I know, right?” He nods in agreement. “Would it be possible for me to borrow the other book you brought? Unless it’s a girly romance or something.”
