I hear some talking in the reception area. It’s Lauren and then I hear a man’s voice. The voice sounds familiar. Oh my God, it can’t be. She’s talking to Spencer – I’m almost certain of it.

Two seconds later they are both at my doorway, peering in. Lauren has a huge silly grin on her face and wide eyes.

Spencer is behind her, looking uncomfortable and a bit sheepish. He has a bag in one hand, which looks like a present of some sort. In the other hand, he has a perfect single red rose.

“Look who I found up front,” Lauren says. She disappears as quickly as she can, closing the door behind her, leaving Spencer and me alone. Fuck, I’m not ready for this…

“I’m sorry to barge in. I know you’re working,” he apologizes. “But, I really need to talk to you.”

This feels surreal right now and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on.

“This is way overdue. And I really can’t apologize enough for that.”

I smirk at him thinking he’s right on the money with that statement.

“When you told me about the baby, I was terrified. I’ve actually never been so terrified,” he says and then takes a deep breath. “I’ve never seen myself as a father. And you and I were just getting to know each other… I just couldn’t wrap my head around what to do about the situation.”

He walks over to the desk, standing right in front of me now.

“I buried myself in work, trying to avoid the situation. But, I know what I want now. I want you. And our baby. I want to be there for it all. And I know I’m going to be a great dad. Not because I have any idea of what I’m doing but I want this, really want this. And I’ll do whatever I have to to make this work.”

I sit in my chair more stunned than I’ve ever been in my life.

“I brought these for you.” He hands me the rose and the gift bag, done up with pink and blue curly ribbons.

I take his offerings, only slightly interested in what’s in the bag. I’m much more interested in what he just said.

“Are you sure?” I ask, looking deeply into his eyes.

“More sure than I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

“What about when things get tough? Having a newborn is no joke. So many late nights and early mornings. Bottles. Diapers… Are you ready for all of that?”

“I am. I want it. All of it.”

“And you and me, we really don’t know each other well yet. What if we argue, disagree, can’t see eye to eye?”

“That’s what couples therapy is for,” he says. “I’m sure all of those things are going to happen. We’ll have to figure it out.”

I get up from my chair, not really trusting my legs to hold me up, and press my body against his, smelling his amazing cologne. I reach my arms up around his neck and feel like I’m holding on for dear life. How did this all happen? And is it real?

Our lips lock in a kiss that takes my breath away. When we finally part, I start laughing. I think it must be from the shock of it all. And the stress I’ve been feeling ever since I saw those two pink lines.

He leans back and grins at me. “What’s so funny?”

“I’m just so happy you’re here. And that you want to give this a chance. Want to giveusa chance.”

“If you’ll have me,” he says, eyes glistening.

“Yes, Spencer, yes. I will definitely have you,” I say, giving him a huge grin. “And I owe you an apology too. You told me at our first meeting how you felt about having kids but I forgot all about it. Somehow I failed to make a note of it in your file. It wasn’t fair of me to practically disappear after the kids conversation at your place. I feel really bad about that and I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. It’s all okay now,” he says, wrapping his arms around me again.

Breaking his hold on me, he picks up the gift bag and hands it to me excitedly. “Open it.”

I reach in and pull out a small box. Something you might use for jewelry. Oh my God… he didn’t. Did he?

I open it up slowly, as if something might pop out and bite me.
