As we celebrate, Brandon pats Roman on the back. “I was wrong to think this thing was bad. Now, my best friend also gets to be my brother-in-law. How cool is that?”

Through bleary eyes, I hug the parents and thank them as they congratulate me. I can’t believe that just over a year ago, I was stuck in a foreign city with a man I couldn’t trust, losing everything that had ever mattered, and now I’m here with everything I ever wanted.

I’m so lucky.

Since there’s not yet any furniture in our new home, we head to the seafood restaurant to celebrate. Leo clings onto me all night, always calling me his mom now. Roman makes a speech about just how much he loves me that sets me off in tears again. We take a dozen photographs, including some of my dazzling ring, and eat enough fudge cake to feed a small village. We talk about Brandon’s wedding, and ours, and we make plans for the future, and I know that everything is right.

Later, with champagne bubbling in my belly and warmth flooding me head to toe, Roman takes me out to the pier to watch the sunset, just like that night last year.

“Can you believe we ended up here?” I ask, admiring my ring for the umpteenth time.

His teeth flash in the dimming light. “No. But thank God it did.”

He pulls me close and shields my cold, bare arms with his warm ones. “I’m going to love you for the rest of my life,” he whispers.

I relax into him, smiling as I close my eyes. “I hope that’s a promise.”

He places a hand on my stomach, drawing heat just as he always does. I can’t wait to get him home, let him ravish me the way he has so many nights before. I have a feeling it will be even more special tonight.

“It’s more than a promise,” he says, kissing my temple. His stubble scrapes against my skin, just the way I like it. “It’s a vow.”
