Ely started at her stunned. He’d known that children were disappearing, but he had no idea how many and he was an officer of the law. Why hadn’t the sheriffs from Francitas and Elmaton contacted them? That just seemed strange.

He’d thought it had been random people driving through town who scooped up a child. He’d warned his friends and family not to let their little ones play outside without one of them being there.

Glancing at his friend, he wondered if he realized how many children had disappeared in their area.

“Did you know about this?”

“No,” Jordan said. “I think we should go back and look to see if there is a pattern. And we need to talk to the other law enforcement. Especially in Francitas and Elmaton. Why in the hell didn’t we know about their cases?”

“No,” Camila said in a strict voice.

“Why not?” Ely said.

“Think about it,” she replied. “This has been going on for over two years and now you’re talking about fifteen missing children. The law has not been communicating with one another. Have you considered it might be an inside job?”

They looked at one another. Ely felt his heart slam into his chest. The thought of a lawman doing this to an innocent child filled him with rage. Not only would it taint the lawmen’s reputation, but how could they do this to a family or a child?

“So you think the law might know what’s going on?”

“Possibly,” she said.

“Does that include us?”

“It includes everyone in the area from the county clerk to the dispatcher to the elementary school principal. Everyone is under suspicion. And I plan on finding out who’s behind this.”

There was something about the way she included everyone that let him know they were also included. And yet he couldn’t blame her. Children were missing. Someone was taking them and possibly selling them to someone in Mexico.

Which made him ill.

Was the sheriff being paid to stay silent? Ely knew that Jordan had not received payment from anyone. The man would have arrested the person sending the funds and put them behind bars.

But Camila didn’t know that.

“How much training do you have in child abduction?” Jordan asked.

Ely’s brows rose and he stared at her. That was a good question. She hadn’t been a marshal for too many years.

“My specialty when I went to college and received my degree in criminal justice was child abduction. It’s been a passion of mine for years.”

That was odd.

“Why?”

Just then Jordan’s phone rang and he frowned.

“Jordan Nash,” he said. His face turned white. “When? What’s your address? We’re on our way.”

It was late. Sure they’d left the wedding reception around nine p.m., but it was now closer to eleven.

Disconnecting the phone, he opened his desk drawer and pulled out his gun belt. “There is a child missing. The family is frantic. We need to go.”

CHAPTER5

This was not supposed to happen again. And she wasn’t prepared. Wearing a sexy dress and heels was not how she wanted to meet the parents of the missing child. She wanted to be taken as a serious lawwoman.

This case was important to her and she was determined to find out who was taking children in this area. Her purpose in life was to rescue abducted children.

When they pulled up in front of the house, the lights were on, and there were multiple cars. A young man stood on the porch. She watched as he opened the door and told someone inside they had arrived.
