“Did you get that list of pedophiles?”

“Yes, they all had legitimate excuses about where they were on that afternoon. I don’t think they’re our suspect.”

She nodded. Standing, she shut her laptop. “I’m going to have dinner with my brother and his new bride. I’ll see you later.”

“Be safe,” he said as she walked out the door.

Sitting in the lonely office, he sighed. There was no doubt in his mind that Camila was their woman, but how did he convince Jordan? And would she be willing to live in Blessing and be married to two men?

She wasn’t from around here and yet her brother shared a woman with Luis Nash, Jordan’s brother.

As he stood to go back to his office, Jordan walked in the front door.

“I hate reporters,” he said. “That bitch wanted me to give her all the details of our case and said the public had a right to know. The public has a right to know just what I tell them. I’m trying to catch this son of a bitch and if I told her everything about the case, then he would know what we know.”

Ely chuckled. “Take a deep breath and release it slowly. You’ve done your public duty and told her just what she and our perp need to know.”

He sank down in his chair.

“I saw Camila leaving. Is everything all right?”

“Yes, she’s having dinner with her brother and his new wife,” Ely said.

“They aren’t on their honeymoon?”

“No, they leave next week,” Ely said. “At least that’s what I heard at the wedding.”

They sat across from one another, the desk between them. “She didn’t invite us to have dinner with her brother.”

Ely heard the hurt in Jordan’s voice.

“I think she needs time to talk to her brother. I don’t know that for certain, but she said she needed to be alone. She’s under a lot of stress.”

Jordan nodded his head. “We all are.”

“She told me why she became a marshal. Pretty damn scary story,” Ely said remembering the way her face had tightened with pain when she told him. “She didn’t want to talk about it, but I kind of forced her.”

“Well, tell me,” Jordan said.

“You should hear it from her, but let’s just say when she was eight, her best friend was kidnapped right before her eyes.”

“Dear God,” Jordan said rubbing his hand over his face. “You know she suspects us being involved.”

Ely had thought that, but he couldn’t blame her. “She wouldn’t be a good marshal if she didn’t.”

No matter what, she would soon know they weren’t the perps, and she had every reason to suspect lawmen since none were sharing information about the cases.

“True,” Jordan said. “So what are two bachelors going to do tonight to keep ourselves entertained?”

Ely knew what he wanted to do, but Camila was gone. “Maybe we should go over every detail of this case. Maybe we’ll find something new. And then she will be thrilled.”

With a nod, Jordan agreed. “I hate this fucking case and when we learn who did this, you’re going to have a hard time keeping me from doing him bodily harm.”

Ely understood and felt the same way, but there were laws and they had to obey them to protect their case.

“No matter what, you can’t give his lawyer something to get him off. I want this bastard to spend the rest of his life behind bars as Bubba’s boyfriend.”

“Agreed,” Jordan said. “It’s strange how a few days ago, we didn’t even know Camila, but now I feel like a part of me is missing.”
