She wondered if they knew the sheriff and his deputy had been indulging in her fantasies. The sex was wonderful, but she feared her focus was not on capturing the people who were behind this group.

“Well, maybe I’ll try it once this case is solved,” she said thinking she should really get back to the office.

“What case are you working on?” Trevor asked. “Sorry, but we’ve been occupied with a wedding, and now, getting ready to go on our honeymoon.”

For the next five minutes, she told them about the little girl Marta who had been taken. Luis knew the family.

“Dear God,” he said. “I’ll send food over to them tomorrow. They must be devastated.”

Camila hated seeing the parents of these missing children. They were often emotionally hysterical and she couldn’t blame them. How did you live knowing that your child had been abducted? Probably sold into slavery.

“Sadly, over a dozen children have disappeared or been taken from this area in the last few years,” she said, not wanting to tell them that not only had she come for their wedding, but also because of this case.

Her brother’s eyes narrowed and he stared at her. “You got involved in this because of your friend…”

She could see him trying to remember her name. “Alexis.”

“Yes,” he said. “That’s why you went into the missing children section of the agency.”

“Yes,” she agreed. “I love what I do, but sometimes it gets to you. Tonight I was glad I would have a chance to be with you and your new bride. Hopefully my brain will get a break from the ugliness and my mind will look at it with a fresh eye.”

Trevor grinned at her. “You’ve always been one of the smartest of my siblings. I’m glad you like what you do, but I could never do this kind of work. I’d kill the sons of bitches.”

How many times had she felt the same way?

His friend Luis frowned. “You know when I was growing up, we had an instance of a child disappearing. At the time, I didn’t pay much attention, but I remember my parents not letting us go to the park.”

That would mean that this had been happening even longer than she suspected.

“When was this? Can you remember the year?”

“I had to be about nine or ten, so almost twenty years ago,” he said.

Dear God in heaven, could it have been going on all this time?

Sure, she had spoken to Jordan and Ely about checking to see how many open cases they had, but she hadn’t truly believed this small town could have so many missing children.

“Thanks for telling me,” she said. “I’m going back to see if I can find that case. Can you remember if there were any more?”

Luis nodded. “For a while, it seemed like we would have one every few years. Random kids would just disappear. Mostly immigrants. I guess everyone thought they ran away looking for a better life in a big city.”

She had begun to believe that Jordan and Ely could not possibly be involved in this and maybe they weren’t, but why hadn’t they told her about these cases? Of course, they were about the same age as Trevor and Luis. Kids didn’t pay attention to abductions unless it was one of their classmates.

“What do they do with these children?” Stacy asked.

Most people really didn’t want to know what happened to the kids they never found. She always tried to keep her explanation brief, simple, and to the point. They didn’t need to know the grim details.

“They’re basically sold into slavery. Some become servants, field workers, or they go into the sex trade.”

Stacy shivered. “Monsters. The people who do this are monsters.”

Camila agreed with her.

“We’re not far from the border. They can kidnap a child and have him or her in Mexico before the sun sets.”

It was then it suddenly hit her. This man had grown up here. “What about private airports? Do you know anyone who has a private plane around here?”

“Rancher Jim White has a private strip and his own plane,” Luis said.
