I stand, pulling her up with me. “Good because we’re making up for lost time and leaving for Hawaii. I think society calls these trips a honeymoon.”

Van

“Where’s your wife?”

I look up from my desk, finding Enoch in my doorway, and sigh. “She texted. She’s running late.”

He glances at his watch. “I’ve never known her to be this late.”

“Would you like me to slit her throat when she gets here as a punishment?” I suggest. “She has been a little unruly lately.”

Enoch, not in the mood for my antics, taps the door frame. “Call me when she gets here.”

I tip my chin and focus back to the brief on my desk, but it doesn’t last long. Now, I’m worried since Enoch pointed out that she’s never been this late before. Could something have happened to her? Surely, no one would be stupid enough to breathe in her vicinity. Everyone in this town knows she’s my wife and off limits to anything with opposable thumbs.

Fuck it. I’m just going to be one of those pussy husbands who checks on their wives when they leave the house for longer than thirty minutes. The phone rings several times before she finally picks up, out of breath. “I’m in the building,” she says in greeting. “Did you know the elevator is out?”

“No, but I will fire whoever failed to fix it in a timely manner.”

She laughs. “You are so ridiculous. You aren’t firing anyone. Besides, going up the stairs with a baby and a diaper bag is oddly refreshing.”

Someone is so getting fired. “Where are you? I’m coming to help since you didn’t call me when you got here like I asked you to.”

Two years of marriage, and my wife still doesn’t listen worth a shit.

“No, you won’t. I’m already at the door.”

I get up anyway, rounding my desk when I hear, “Cohen! You came to see us!”

Smiling, I follow the coos and squeals to the lobby, finding my soon-to-be-son grinning while showing off his new glasses.

“Da!” he hollers when he finally sees me, wiggling furiously in Reese’s arms. “Da!”

I walk over, take the squirming three-year-old, and kiss his wet cheek. “Happy Gotcha Day, buddy!”

This day has been a long time in the making. Reese and I knew the minute we saw him in the arms of a social worker that he was our son. With his extra chromosome and my sparkling personality, he will be a heartbreaker—just like his mother.

“Do you want to see Great Grandpa before he makes us promise a bunch of legal nonsense to make you an official Cain?” I bounce the little boy on my hip. Like our marriage, Judge Enoch Gadot, my grandfather, is signing off on our new addition to the family at my request.

Like anything, time has helped heal the distance I put between us after finding out that Enoch betrayed me. While I know his actions were for my own good, they still sting. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my grandfather, it’s that everyone deserves second chances—even well-meaning judges.

“Pa!” Cohen screams. “Pa! Pa!”

Between my brothers, Enoch, and Magda, this boy’s feet barely touch the floor. When they do, we all have our phones recording. Cohen has been a blessing to our family and has given me something I never thought I’d have: an heir.

Reese and I couldn’t be happier. Not only has Cohen given me a future, but he’s also provided Reese with a new career. Since she no longer needs to hack the students at the university to send money to women’s shelters, she’s agreed to help Kane and Julia with theirs, all the while being a full-time wife and mom.

I tried to tell her that she didn’t have to give up her teaching assistant job. We could hire a nanny for Cohen, and I, obviously, can care for myself. But she insisted that nothing was more gratifying than taking care of her family.

“You all right?” Reese whispers in my ear.

I smile, taking in her flushed cheeks and messy hair. “I’m more than okay.” I grab her hand. “Tell everyone goodbye.”

We have a family to make official.

It takes several minutes for Reese and Cohen to blow eight billion kisses to all the secretaries up front, but finally, we’re headed down the long hall to Enoch’s chambers.

“You want to know something funny?”
