Chapter 43

Scarlett

"There was something different about him the next day. I couldn’t place my finger on it, until he called me into his office two hours before lunch.

“Have you had breakfast yet?” he asked, and I watched as he slipped his jacket back on.

“No,” I replied almost distractedly as I watched his body with hunger.

He turned to face me, and I was forced to wake up from my lustful daydreaming.

“Let's go get something to eat,” he said, and I was quite taken aback. This wasn’t my first stint as a personal assistant. And so randomly going to eat with your assistant in the middle of the morning when meetings and obligations were scheduled in full was incredibly alarming.

However, he said it so casually and didn't seem too concerned with his schedule that I couldn’t help but feel afraid.

“You… uh… you have a meeting with the investment team in a few minutes, sir,” I reminded him.

“Isn't Gary here today?” he asked, and I nodded.

“He is, sir.”

“Then tell him to handle it. And if there’s a need for further input, then let me know when I get back, and I'll arrange another quick meeting with them for this evening.”

I listened to his words and wondered if he had just said them for the sake of it or if he was being deliberate with his words because, from what he had just said, it was as though he didn't care he was skipping a meeting he needed to be at.

And so, to all of this, I truly didn't know the response to give.

“Um… sure, sir,” I said, and our eyes met. “I’ll go make the call.”

He paused, and I gave his expression every single bit of scrutiny, yet I couldn’t quite find anything to back up my belief that he was about to fire me over breakfast or whatever this sudden outing was.

I was exhausted and all of this worry and guessing put me in an even worse mood than the one I had been nursing all evening yesterday. I hated that I felt so worried and afraid, and so when I woke up this morning, everything just seemed bleak.

I couldn’t give up now, and most importantly, I couldn’t get fired, so I prepared myself to be able to say anything and plead the moment he even so much as brought up the suggestion.

Michael was waiting with the town car when we made it downstairs and we both climbed into the backseat.

“What do you want to eat?” he asked and pulled out his phone from his pocket. I turned to him, and at my widened eyes and expression, he seemed to also wonder what was wrong.

“Are you okay?” he asked, and I nodded albeit reluctantly, but what else was there to say?

“Are you? You’re asking me to go eat with you and you’re asking what I want rather than what you want even though you're my employer and I’m the employee?”

He ignored my question and turned to the front and told Michael where to go and the car moved into traffic.

I glanced over at my boss and found him staring out of the window with his hand on his chin and his gaze watchful.

I just felt so incredibly nervous and vulnerable, exposed, and I wondered why. It was making me overly emotional when there was truly no need to be, and at the end of the day, I understood that it was because I now care more than I'd ever expected to. I cared that the man beside me was about to fire me, not just because it was Sophie's job, but because just a few days earlier, we'd fallen asleep in each other's arms. It made me wonder how the hell he'd been able to convince himself and me that if we were intimate for just one night, everything else would return to normal because that was absolutely ridiculous and untrue.

There was no way in hell things were going to go back to normal, and being the extremely smart man that he was, he had probably realized this and was about to take rapid action. He couldn’t even wait for the week to be over.

Sighing I couldn’t keep from wringing my hands, and this is when he turned to face me.

“Are you alright?” he asked, and my eyes tightened shut because I truly wished that he wouldn’t feign concern in this way when he was literally about to do something so evil. I thought of how to approach this. Could I convince him that there was no need to fire me because I wasn’t actually Sophie and so he hadn’t slept with his secretary, hence there was no reason to feel awkward about it or around me.

There were so many things to consider and actually quite several ways to resolve them, but I couldn’t see a single way out of this that wouldn’t cause me immense pain.

Regardless and not wanting to jump the gun, I remained quiet as I weighed my options and decided that unless he outrightly came to fire me, then I would simply observe. I had been a personal assistant for too long not to understand the power of saying less, so I remained as docile as possible untilwe got to the bistro. This wasn’t a cheap place, but it wasn’t too expensive either.
