“My, uh… it was true, my fiancé suddenly broke up with me and called our wedding off. This happened when I left early from work Monday and… I just… things had reached a breaking point and I didn't imagine that I could go on without a break. We’ve done things like this a few times in the past, even to our mom when we were younger, so I thought of it for a moment and made a bad call. I am deeply sorry.”

I held my chin, and I shifted even more comfortably in my seat because this was getting more interesting than I could have anticipated.

“What exactly made you so sure that I was going to completely believe that she was you?” I asked, and she looked at me again.

“I wasn't sure. I was just a bit delirious at the time enough to try. It was a terrible call.”

“You see it now as a terrible decision because you got caught?”

She shook her head.

“I knew it was a terrible decision from the beginning because I know just how much you value loyalty and how much you hate lies. I… I understand if you want to fire me because of this, but I want you to know that I would never have let it go on for long, and I didn't do it to cause you harm in any way. Things just got more…” She paused, but I understood exactly what she was saying and where she was going, and I couldn't help but feel a little bit uncomfortable that she was aware of how my relationship with her sister had turned sexual so rapidly while Ithought she was the one. Facing the real person now, I had to admit that this was a bit difficult for me to swallow.

“What exit was the agreement between you two?” I asked. “I mean, how long was this supposed to go on for?”

“Just for the week.” She replied. “I was sure I would be able to get my bearings back and recover within the time.”

This made me frown.

“So if your arrangement was for the week, then why did she suddenly quit today?”

The room went silent now, and I watched closely because I couldn’t tell if she didn't know the answer to give or if she was looking for a way to lie.

“Um,” she eventually replied. “I'm not entirely sure about that, sir. She hasn’t shared that with me yet.”

“But you two were together when Felix arrived.”

“Yes, but we decided to put away all talk about this for later on. Neither of us were in the best of moods.”

I was reluctant to ask this, worried that it would reveal to both me and Sophie the uncontrollable concern I felt at her words.

“Is she okay?” I asked. “Is she sick?”

“Not really,” she replied. “We haven’t talked about it. We were at odds as well because of how abruptly she had left earlier today.”

I understood why she had left abruptly earlier this morning, but apparently, she hadn’t told her sister about it.

“Are you two very close?” I asked. One would think it was a given that they were since they were twins, but I understood that this wasn’t always the case.

“Before now, not very. We speak more on the phone than actually meeting up, but we’ve never been at odds.”

I listened to her, and then I nodded. Truthfully, I didn't know how to go forward from here or what to do, and so I decided togive myself a few days to sit on it since my curiosity had been sated.

I wanted to see Scarlett, but I held back. I deeply suspected that more emotion than was needed would come into play if I didn’t see her, but I couldn't trust myself to make the right call, and this was so strange to me. I’d always been able to compartmentalize emotions and distractions, but now and perhaps it was because of the late hour, it all just felt so muddled to me, and the last thing I wanted was to deal with anything. So ultimately, and since I had heard enough, I decided to dismiss her for the night.

“You can go,” I told her. “I'll communicate my decisions about your position here with Human Resources, and they’ll communicate with you on any necessary updates.”

She was quiet for a long moment, and then she nodded, her shoulders slightly slumped in defeat. Just before she left, however, there was one more request that I had.

“Give me your sister's phone number,” I asked.

At first, she hesitated, but in the end, she headed over and I handed my phone over to her. She knew my password and all my details, so I didn’t need to say a word as she inputted the phone number and then saved her contact.

“Goodnight, sir,” she said, I didn't hear her. My attention now was completely on the new name that had been added to my contacts. I stared at the words and realized that I had been more intimate with this stranger than I had been with anyone else for as long as I could remember.

And yet, I had never called her by her name.
