“Maybe it was a pension fund?” Nicky suggested.

“No, I’ve checked the amounts against the amounts paid from Dad’s accounts,” Lorry said. “The dates and amounts are an exact match.”

“That must’ve been the funds paying for Megan’s tuition,” Nicky realized. “That makes sense. Megan said the funds stopped around the same time you changed the bank accounts, Lorry.”

“We also found a lot of medical bills for Megan’s mother that Dad paid for,” Steph told her.

“Megan mentioned that her mother got sick, and we knew that already,” Nicky reminded them. “Dad was helping Megan’s mother with medical bills that her medical insurance didn’t cover.”

“It was more than that,” Lorry told her and put some bills in front of Nicky. “Take a look at those. Her mother had to have extensive back surgeries and was on the organ transplant list for a kidney.”

“It seems like Megan’s mother didn’t fall ill. She was in an accident,” Lorry filled Nicky in. “We found the accident report.”

“What has Megan’s mother’s accident report got to do with our family?” Nicky frowned.

“We don’t know, but Dad coveredallher medical costs,” Lorry said, handing the accident report to Nicky.

“Then carried on paying until we put a stop to it,” Steph continued.

“There’s not much in this report.” Nicky frowned, confused. “All it says is that Jackie Riley was involved in an accident.”

“I know, right!” Steph’s eyes widened in disbelief. “I’ve asked Sunny, a friend of mine who works at the police department, to see if she can find out anything for us.”

“Why?” Nicky asked, putting the report on the table. Her eyes widened in realization. “Do you think that maybe Dad had something to do with the accident?”

“Why else would he cover all her medical costs?” Steph asked.

“Maybe because she worked for the hotel since she was twenty and was a good employee and a single mother,” Nicky stated.

“This police report and the fact that Mom gets so angry when we bring up the mysterious payments,” Lorry said, raising her brows, “tells me that there’s alotmore to this.”

Nicky frowned. Her eyes scanned the boxes. “What else is in these boxes?”

“Mainly just receipts. Medical tests. Medical records.” Steph flipped through a few items in one of the boxes.

“There is alotin them,” Lorry told her. “It’s going to take time to go through it.” She looked around. “I say we don’t let Mom or Gran know about this.”

“Why?” Nicky asked again.

“Let’s find out what we can first,” Lorry said, shaking her head. “While we know that Dad didn’t have a second family, he could still have had an affair with Jackie.”

“Jackie?” Nicky gaped at her oldest sister in disbelief. “That’s absurd. She was your age, Lorry.”

“This happened seven years ago!” Steph’s brow crinkled, and she thoughtfully bit the side of her mouth. “Something is nagging me about that time.” She leaned forward and looked at the accident report. “The accident happened right before Halloween.”

“Oh!” Nicky’s eyes widened as she stared at Steph, remembering that Halloween. “That was the year—” She swallowed, and her eyes moved toward Lorry, who was looking at her curiously.

“The year that what?” Lorry asked, leaning her elbows on the table.

“Uh…” Nicky panicked and looked at Steph, who looked at her with wide worried eyes.

“Okay, you two.” Lorry ran her index finger from Nicky to Steph. “Spit it out.”

“We… Uh…” Steph looked at Nicky.

“That was just after you’d filed for divorce,” Nicky hedged.

“Yes.” Lorry nodded, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. “And…”
