I agreed with a nod. “It hurts beyond words, but the worst thing is knowing that she’s suffering because of me. She needs to know I love her.”

“Then don’t give up.” August leaned toward me and clapped me on the back. “Find a way to look her in the eyes and tell her how you feel. It doesn’t have to be romantic or the perfect place. Just tell her. You have nothing else to lose.”

“He’s right,” Dante added. “Show her how much she means to you, and make it big. Even a public declaration, if you have to. You owe her that much.”

I gave them both a grateful smile and a nod, then ran out of the gym.

After a quick shower and change, I headed straight to Grace’s room and settled on the floor next to her door. There was complete silence inside, so she was still asleep. I was prepared to wait, no matter how long it would take.

A few minutes later, Henri walked by and paused in front of me, wearing a curious expression. “Is everything all right, Your Highness?”

I nodded and kept my voice low. “I’m waiting for Grace to wake up. What time will her breakfast be delivered? I need to speak with her.”

“I’m sorry to inform you, Your Highness, but Miss Grace is not here,” Henri revealed.

“What?!” I jumped to my feet, cursing myself for not spending the entire night in front of her door. “Where could she have gone so early?”

“She mentioned she was on her way to the airport, Your Highness,” he disclosed. “Her flight back to America departs at nine.”

My heart nearly stopped.

How had I not seen that coming? The only thing Grace wanted was to distance herself from me and my lies, and who could really blame her? I deserved it, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to try to stop her. The thought of a life without Grace made my heart ache.

“This is a nightmare,” I muttered, checking my watch. “I don’t have much time.”

“Is there anything I can do, Your Highness?” Henri offered.

“Yes—please prepare the helicopter,” I instructed urgently. “I need to get to the airport before that plane takes off.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

GRACE

My flight was scheduled to board in ten minutes, and all I could think about was getting on that plane and escaping the remnants of a relationship that had turned into a dumpster fire. The sooner I got home, the better.

Then, out of the blue, fate decided to kick me while I was down.

I glanced up at the departure display at the gate, only to witness the status of my flight change from “On Time” to “Delayed.”

I stared at the dreaded D word in disbelief.

It made no sense.

The plane was there.

The passengers had disembarked ages ago.

What could possibly be causing this delay?

Determined to unravel the mystery, I approached the airline counter. The employee wore a grin so exuberant it could have powered a small country.

“Good morning!” she said. “How may I help you on this beautiful day?”

“Good morning,” I replied, though my heart wasn’t in it. “Any idea why the flight is delayed? I thought we were just getting ready to board.”

“I don’t have a clue!” she chirped. “I’m sure it won’t be much longer. You hang in there. I’ll try to get an update and make an announcement soon.” Another radiant smile followed.

I mumbled my thanks.
