I’d seen this strange phenomenon in movies, the use of informal language and endearing terms with complete strangers. I’d heard it was common in Southern culture and a sign of friendliness, warm hospitality, and respect. We were in a restaurant that served Southern cuisine, therefore it made sense.

The logical thing to do was to play along.

I did my best to act naturally. I was just a normal customer. Nobody would know that a prince sat among them in such a casual eating establishment.

“I’m absolutely wonderful, darlin’,” I said.

Dante looked flabbergasted, mouth agape like a codfish.

“Now, that’s what I like to hear!” Sadie said with a wink. “Can I start you off with something to drink?”

“A sweet tea, if you don’t mind,” I said.

“Don’t mind at all.” She smiled again, tapping my drink order on her tablet, then gesturing to the menu in my hands. “Do you need more time to decide on food?”

“Not at all,” I said, glancing down at the menu.

Grace had texted me to let me know she was running late, and that I could order the food. When I inquired what she desired, she simply said that everything looked good on the menu, and to surprise her.

Challenge accepted.

“I’d like the deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and the fried okra,” I said.

“Three of my favorites,” Sadie said, tapping my order into her tablet. “Anything else?”

“Oh, yes—I’m just getting started,” I said. “I’d also love to try the chicken and waffles, mac and cheese, catfish nuggets, collard greens, potato salad, and black-eyed peas.”

Sadie looked up from her tablet, eying my physique. “Please tell me you’re expecting someone else to join you.”

“Indeed, I am,” I said. “She’s running late.”

She pretended to wipe perspiration from her forehead. “Phewww! You scared me there for a second. Still, unless you love to have leftovers to go, that is a lot of food for two people. You do know that, right?”

“I’m aware that it’s more than we could possibly eat,” I said. “But this is our first time eating together and I don’t have a clue what she likes, so?—”

“You thought you’d just order a variety to make her happy,” she said.

I hesitated, surprised she knew that. “Yes, actually.”

“You’re just as sweet as our peach cobbler,” Sadie said. “She’s a lucky girl if you’re so thoughtful this early in your relationship.”

I shook my head. “Oh, we’re not?—”

Sadie waved it off. “I don’t need to know all the juicy details. I’m not one to pry, but I would recommend two sweet teas, since you’ll have company.”

“Excellent recommendation,” I said. “And please add an order of buttermilk biscuits and cornbread.”

Sadie smiled as she took my menu. “A meal fit for a king.”

“A prince, actually,” Dante said.

I froze.

Dante’s hand flew up to cover his mouth.

Sadie turned and eyed him. “Pardon me?”

“Sorry to interrupt.” Dante quickly pointed at the ceiling. “I, uh, asked if that was Prince playing on your sound system?”
