Knowing my boy scout, he wanted to take Benedict into custody and bring him home. Hell, he’d probably gone and gotten a warrant for his arrest.

But Ry didn’t take orders from Ez, and for that I was grateful. I’d seen the throwing knives ensconced in his wrist sheath as he pulled the sleeve of his black Henley down over them. Knowing they were there was small comfort—at least we weren’t completely defenceless.

But maybe it was a good thing too. Watching the fuck bleed out from his cut throat would be a whole lot more satisfying than a bullet to the brain ending things quickly.

I wanted to send him off knowing exactly whose eyes he was looking into.

He would beg for death, and I would gladly oblige.

After I’d extracted my pound of flesh.

Testing the weight of a marble statue on a side table, I took it with me. Destroying his shit would be a bonus.

The sound of a glass being picked up drew my attention, my muscles coiling to attack. The others had heard it too, all moving soundlessly in that direction.

Adrenaline rushed through me, the desire to fuck him up overwhelming.

We were in position, spread out on either side of the high-backed armchair he was sitting on, Ezra and I on one side and Ry flanked by Tristan and Flynn coming in on the other.

Ezra drew a gun from the back of his pants, and my eyes boggled. Cheeky fucker had lied to me.

I saw a head rising above the couch.

A woman, not a man.

Oh, Jesus Christ, we’d caught his wife or daughter. Where the fuck was he?

My heart hammered in my chest. If he came in from behind us, he could hurt my guys. I twisted my foot, preparing to pivot and guard our rear.

She turned.

Time stopped.

My vision swam.

My knees went weak.

Ezra squeezed my hand until my knuckles cracked and I sucked in a breath.

Everything snapped back into sharp relief.

I looked at her.

Blinked.

Looked again.

This couldn’t be real. It couldn’t be happening.

“Mum?” I breathed, my chest constricting. I tried to breathe again but couldn’t.

The statue fell from my grip, the quiet of the night shattered by the dull thunk the marble made.

Confusion reigned supreme.

I didn’t understand.

I couldn’t understand.
