I froze. Shock held me immobile. She really was evil. Everything else—the theft, the hiding her tracks, even the death threats to a certain extent—could be excused as greed. But that? Murdering her own child?

“This, you fucking monster, is for my brother,” Zali spat, her voice laced with venom.

She fired.

The shot landed true. Right between Rosa’s eyes.

A circle appeared on her forehead, blood instantly painting her eyes red.

They bulged for a split second, her skull elongated as the bullet sped through her brain and hit the back of her skull.

Rosa’s head exploded.

A gruesome mix of blood, bone, and brain matter splattered backward.

The white couch turned red.

Rosa’s body slumped.

Dead.

“Good fucking riddance,” Zali muttered.

She placed my gun on the table.

Then she turned on the balls of her feet and headed for our guys.

“Hold tight, Ry,” Tris said, his voice tinged with desperation. “We’ll get you help.”

Sixteen

Zali

Iblinked, taking in the scene in front of me. Blood and gore were everywhere, sprayed like a head-sized paintball had exploded. I supposed it had. Ew.

Her eyes were glazed over, unseeing forever more. Her mouth was slack, open a fraction. She lay at an awkward angle with the top half of her body on the couch. Her leg was bent unnaturally, and her arms were splayed out by her sides, palms up.

But even in death she wasn’t still.

She slid to the floor, a slow wet squelch leaving a trail of smeared blood down her white couch.

Disgust filled me.

“Good fucking riddance,” I spat. I wanted to unload the entire clip into her. I wanted to make her as unrecognizable as she’d become to me. I wanted to wipe her face away so that I didn’t see her in the mirror every time I looked in it.

Instead, I gathered every ounce of strength I possessed and placed Ezra’s gun gently on the table.

Then I turned and walked away.

She was no longer my mother.

She was a stranger, and I wouldn’t grieve another moment for her.

“Hold tight, Ry,” Tristan begged. “We’ll get you help.”

“Zee,” Flynn cried, standing up and racing over to me.

“I’m okay,” I reassured him, turning him away before he could see what remained of her. I abso-fucking-lutely wouldn’t let the vision of the person who birthed me lying there on the floor upset one of the sweetest, most beautiful souls in my world.
