“Come for me, Audrey. I want to see you come undone. Come all over my cock like a good little girl.” I growl as I slam my hips home. Blinding white light fills my vision as I collapse on top of her.

“Connor!” she screams before biting down on my shoulder, trying to keep our actions a secret from everyone in the house. My knees buckle from the pleasure coursing through my body, and I collapse on top of her.

“Dad, time for dinner,” Jade shouts as she bangs on the bathroom door, bringing me back to the present.

I startle slightly, pain shooting up my back as I grip the side of the sink. “Be right out,” I reply through clenched teeth before washing my hands quickly.

“Teenage boys have it much easier,” I say to my reflection before flicking off the light and heading toward the kitchen.

Chapter 10

Audrey

Dinner is a hit. Both girls clean their plates in no time before heading back upstairs. I make sure Connor is settled on the couch before I begin the dishes. Connor tried to take care of them, but there was no way I would let him stand there washing dishes, especially after being the reason he was hurt. I wince slightly every time I see him struggle to move around the house or give his daughter a hug. He keeps telling me it was an accident, and I know that, but all my mind can focus on is how much worse things could’ve been.

If I knew what was good for me, I’d have just dropped him off here, grabbed Love, and headed home. But a small part of me enjoys being here with him and Jade, taking care of them as if the four of us are one big, happy family. I can see a future here with the four of us, spending lazy Sundays huddled together on the couch, watching movies, and having family game nights and large dinners with all our friends. Creating a home full ofhappiness and love, something that Love and I have been missing for some time now.

But I need to be careful. On the surface, Connor seems like my ideal man: gorgeous, with his own house and business, and I can already tell that he’s beginning to care for my daughter, as well. Things weren’t much different with Ian in the beginning, but we know how that turned out. Although Connor has said we could just be friends, he’s made it more than clear that he can see there is something more between us. Hell, so can I, but I promised Love this time would be different. It’s time for me to focus on my daughter and her happiness.

People say that men and women can’t be friends, but it’s happened in the past. Now all I need to do is get control of my libido. Friends don’t sleep with each other, at least the type of friends I should be with Connor, that is. Just being in the same room is almost unbearable. I can’t stop thinking about how his body felt pressed against mine, how his eyes drifted shut, and the hum of contentment that passed his lips every time I touched him.

“Hey, Audrey. Do you need any help?” Jade’s voice is like a bucket of ice water being dumped on all my fantasies.

“Since I don’t know where anything goes, can you put the dishes away? I’ll wash, and Love can dry.”

“You got it,” Jade says with a smile before grabbing a dish towel from the drawer.

“Hey, Love, get your booty in here so we can get these dishes finished!” I shout, knowing she’s lurking nearby.

“No need to shout, Mom. I’m standing right here,” Love mutters as she grabs the dish towel from Jade and gets to work drying the dishes.

The three of us work in silence before Jade blurts out, “Thanks for taking care of my dad.”

“It’s the least I could do. After all, it was my fault,” I respond with a smile, my attention focused on the dishes.

“No, Audrey. Taking him to the hospital and making sure he won’t sue you is what any normal person would’ve done,” Jade mutters. “But you made sure he was okay. You made sure there was someone there to take care of me, and you made sure that I wouldn’t be left here alone.”

“Your dad…”

“My dad probably told you nothing was wrong and tried to go on as if nothing happened, but you made him get looked at,” Jade rebuts, her voice thick with emotion. “My dad is the strongest person I know, but it’s nice to have someone looking out for the both of us for a change.”

I freeze in place, wondering exactly what the right thing to say is at this moment. Jade and Connor have spent all their lives here. They have family here, people they can depend on, but I’m wondering if anyone ever takes care of them. People can make sure they don’t need anything or are available in case of an emergency, but does anyone do things for them because they care?

“There are plenty of people around to take care of you and your dad, Jade.”

“I don’t think that’s what she means, Mom,” Love whispers, bumping her shoulder against mine and motioning toward Jade.

I glance in her direction and notice her head bowed as she furiously wipes at her cheeks. I know that look. I’ve seen it reflecting at me in the mirror for years. Jade is more than likely carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Wanting to make things as easy for her dad as possible. Not to be too much trouble or cause him any stress, but deep down, all she wants is to be coddled occasionally.

“Sometimes I wish my mom was still around.”

“Your mom is always here with you, Jade, even though you can’t see her,” I respond, wiping my hands on my pants. “I never had the honor of meeting your mother, but I know she and your dad love you very much.”

“Listen to my mom. She knows things.”

“I know you mean well, Audrey, but you couldn’t possibly understand what it’s like to grow up without a mom.”

“Maybe not, but I know what it’s like to lose one.” I sigh, turning around and leaning against the counter beside Jade. “My mom died in a car accident a few months before Love’s first birthday.”
