“Including something that doesn’t need a road if she could take them out with corrupted,” James mumbled.

Right, the choppers would work as well. Smart.

Well, at least they used their heads to protect me if they wouldn’t use them on how to love me. That was something.

Things moved fast, and about twenty minutes later there were about two dozen strange humans who were fighting the need to throw up in my dining hall.

“For the record, that does get better, but I don’t recommend it on a full stomach or when drinking,” Chris said.

“Who are you?” the guy who had arrived first and seemed most recovered asked.

I listened as James and Chris gave their information and they traded names, ranks, stations, and just about everything besides shoe size.

Honestly, they might have done that as well.

“Begley?” one of them muttered. “We had five Begleys that were with us that went to look for family.”

“My younger brother and my cousins found me,” James said, his tone deadly. “And warned us how they weren’t allowed to leave after being welcomed, drafted apparently, and deserters tracked down and shot.”

Several of the men there exchanged looks, the eldest of them clearing his throat. “Look, some of that isn’t what it seems, but you know—we all know that keeping order when there are problems is the hardest part of any situation. The three governors have taken things way too far. A few of the lackeys at their side.”

“That oddly enough you didn’t bring with,” one of them hedged, glancing around.

“That was intentional,” Petre chuckled darkly, shooting me a look. “Eddie warned us of a few that are drinking the ‘cray-cray juice’ just as bad as the governors.”

That older one nodded, focused mostly on James, thinking him in charge. “I’m glad your family got out. A few of us were thinking of figuring out how to sneak them out, but outside wasn’t any safer. Until the governors started losing it with their crazy demands, they were still safer with us and some damn yelling, but they’ve started unraveling.

“And even if we took over—which we easily can—then what? What’s the plan? Watch our backs every second? You know once that starts, it doesn’t stop. So clearly, the message we received was right and you’re not human. I don’t care. I don’t care if you’re fucking aliens if you’re the ones who have been taking out corrupted and helping us.”

“That’s very open-minded of you,” James muttered.

“Shockingly so,” Kristof agreed.

That human sighed. “I was three months from retiring. Three fucking months from being done with the military and all of the bullshit after dealing with the military and all of its bullshit since I turned eighteen. And then it’s zombies and the mother fucking apocalypse. I’m tired. I’m beyond tired. And we’re not doing well.

“The governors are losing their grip and have no real plan besides to take America back. Come on? What fucking America? We’ve been locked down there with no real contact, and we know it’s not because everything else has been thriving and fine. So fuck, if someone else has a real plan and way to let the people under us survive and have a future worth having—I’m in.”

He gestured around our awesome castle and dining hall with tons of food being offered, all of us put together as if to say I want in.

Fair enough.

And all of them seemed to be of the same opinion.

Even better.

I had more breakfast as James and the others explained to the humans what we had and where we were at. It went on long enough that I ate a few plates of yum and had another fancy latte that Nick had whipped up for me. We’d figured out together that apparently I liked fancy when it was coffee and now that it was colder in the mornings, I liked warm coffee.

Not hot. Warm.

Which amused just about everyone but fuck it. I didn’t like things burning my tongue or feeling too hot going in. Warm was… Soothing.

It made sense in my head.

“Wait, you’re not the boss of all of this?” one of the humans cut in.

“No, My Princess is,” James answered.

They all turned to look where James must have been gesturing and focused on me. I simply waved my fingers at them with a smile that amused Kristof.
