And I cuffed him upside the head, shocking everyone there, even those who knew me.

“We’re not giving the people we don’t know a nuclear fucking aircraft carrier,” I bit out.

He rubbed his head even if it didn’t really hurt. “I was going to get the weapons taken off first.”

I sighed. “Right, but then they just needed to find more bullets or rockets since they have the systems to shoots stuff. The plan has promise but use cruise ships. The worst they could do is sail away with a fixed ship and whatever.”

“You really are very distrusting,” one of the humans said, his tone amused but also admonishing me.

I simply snickered and raised an eyebrow at him. “So you’re fine giving me the key to your armory? No, you don’t even let everyone at your damn base have access.”

He cleared his throat and nodded. “Cruise ships would work as well if we can rig them with the ability to tow ships in.”

“I would think a dozen tow boats assigned to each ship to bring things back to port would be better,” I countered. “That way it can be done more than our areas and outposts. There’s no reason you can’t help in Ireland or with our allies getting their waters cleaned up as well.”

Most seemed to accept that, and I shot James an annoyed look to remember what fucking team he was on. He wasn’t part of the US military anymore.

Idiot.

And then the ghosts started. Great.

“What’s with you?” Sebastian asked me off to the side while others were dealing with the humans we’d technically abducted.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I feel anxious.” I sighed when I knew that wouldn’t be enough for him, meeting his gaze. “Aether keeps trying to tell me something, but I get the feeling it’s changing. Like She wants to warn me, but She doesn’t know to warn me of what yet.”

He let out a slow breath. “I cannot believe she was dealing with the visions and quests all on her own and we had no clue most times.”

“Yeah, but the signs were there, and I’ll never forgive myself for that,” I muttered, scrubbing my neck. “But I just need to be near Inez. It’s like my gut hurts the moment I’m about to move away from her.”

“That’s worrisome,” he muttered.

Yeah, it was, and we’d had enough to be worried about already.

Inez cracked James upside the head and I moved closer without even making the choice to, worried what was going on. Relief filled me when I heard what was going on and I crossed my arms over my chest.

“You’re on edge,” Darius muttered, not bothering to make it a question when the answer was obvious.

“The picture Aether is giving me isn’t clear,” I grumbled.

“Yeah, that’s rough. It’s hard to understand the plan and follow what She wants. I don’t know how Inez did it for as long as she did.”

I started to bob my head in agreement but then did a double take. “Something’s going on that you’re not telling us.”

“I can’t,” Darius whispered. “Aether made it clear that I’m helping future Inez, but I can’t tell anyone. It doesn’t make sense and the guilt eats me, so I haven’t been spending time with her again and…”

“That’s the one thing she truly wants to fix our relationships, so this is making you do even more damage,” I muttered, hating that I basically poured salt in his wounds to say it. “Tell her.” I nodded when he simply blinked at me. “Tell Inez that Aether is leading you to something and it makes you uncomfortable to keep it quiet from your wife.

“But that you trust in Aether and understand what Inez went through better. It might drive her crazy to not know, but she’ll understand how Aether works, Darius. Don’t let doing what the Goddess says Inez needs ruin your relationship. She needs us as much as Aether’s help. Inez made that clear and that we need to be on the team.”

“I’ll think about it,” Darius whispered after a moment. “It feels like everything will fall apart if I tell her what’s going on even if I don’t tell her what’s really happening.” He waited until I looked at him. “Our wife is too smart to not put together why Aether chose me.”

He walked off, dejected and exhausted from what I could sense.

But what he said didn’t make sense and would bug me.
