Harlow sat opposite him looking a million dollars and smelling even better. It was their first date, and they were at a small bar just outside of town that served the best steak for miles. Colt watched as she licked her lips before taking a sip of wine to wash down her meal.

“My god, you weren’t lying.” She sighed happily. “This place is unreal.”

“Told you.” He smiled at seeing her satisfied. “So, this has been good, don’t you think?” he asked.

She raised her drink to him, the red wine swirling against the glass. “It has, thank you.”

“Did you have any more thoughts about what we talked about at the gym?” He couldn’t suppress the hope in his voice.

“I did. I mean I can’t say it’s easy after everything, and I’m a little scared about it not going right.”

Colt reached over the table and took her hand. “I know you’re bound to be afraid, but the only thing I can say is that you can trust me. You can trust the pull between us. I’d never do anything to hurt you, and if things weren’t right for you, you can say so. It won’t affect your safe haven or anything like that. You’re safe with us.”

She smiled, her eyes warm, the golden flecks radiating. “I think I know that,” she said. “I couldn’t do this otherwise.”

Spending the next few hours talking and getting to know her was both effortless and completely compelling. The bond between them grew with each passing minute, and Colt wanted nothing more than to just be close to her in every way possible.

“Why are you looking at me like that.” She grinned as they finished their drinks.

“Like what?” He feigned innocence. “You ready to leave?”

She nodded, and they headed outside. She gasped when he pulled her to the side of the building and pressed her up against the wall.

“Someone needs to teach you some self-defense,” he said, pressing his lips to her neck. She moaned and raised her hands to his nape, teasing his hair through her fingers.

“If you know someone, let me know,” she teased, her breath hitching when he ran his tongue along her jawline.

When he reached her mouth he stopped, briefly inhaling before tasting her again. “My god, Harlow, what are you doing to me?” he breathed as he took her face in his hands, his mouth crashing down on hers.

Her hands now on his back felt like heaven, and he wished more than ever that they were alone and naked together, but that couldn’t happen. Yet. But he wanted so much more. He wanted to taste every inch of her, the scent of her arousal making him wild.

“Colt,” she gasped as he brushed his hand over her hip and ran it up her dress, moving slowly toward the heat between her legs.

“Oh, fuck.” He stroked softly up and down the now-soaked cotton, aware that they were still in a public place though needing so much to be inside her one way or another.

Quickly he pulled his hand away, kissing her softly, before holding her close against him. “I’m sorry,” he whispered into her ear. “I can’t help it. You drive me crazy.”

“I know,” she burrowed her face into his chest. “So much for us taking it slowly.”

Chapter 16

Colt

The sounds eventually penetrated his awareness. Loud, hard thumps that soon had him awake and jumping from his bed before heading to the front door, wondering what the hell was going on. He opened it to a hard-faced Atlas, his eyes angry and narrow and his head tilted upward as he inhaled everything around him.

“What the fuck, man!” Colt scrubbed his hands over his face, realizing he was standing there just in his boxers, and stepped back to let his friend into the house.

“Big night?” Atlas’s voice was gruff and laced with what smelled like jealousy.

“Not really.” Colt’s reply was a mellow contrast to that of the alpha.

“Don’t lie to me. I can smell it on you,” Atlas growled, his lip curling with a snarl.

Colt smarted, raising his eyebrows in surprise. He was used to Atlas. God knew he’d seen enough of who he was and what he could do, but he’d never experienced this with him before. But then again, neither of them had ever been in this position before—not until Harlow arrived.

“Look, let’s talk about this,” Colt offered, hoping to bring down the temperature. “Yes, I was with Harlow last night. We’ve been getting… closer.”
