If only this dream was real.

Heba’s breath stuttered when warm, calloused palms enfolded her hands, holding them against the face she touched.

“Open your eyes, little cat,” Shai’s low rumble reached her ears, making her shiver as it always did, the timbre of his husky baritone prickling her skin like a physical caress.

“Awake from your dreaming. It’s time tolive.”

Oh, but Heba was terribly afraid. She didn’t want him to be an illusion. She didn’t want her heart to break all over again if he wasn’t real.

She must have made a sound of distress, for strong arms came around her suddenly, hugging her tight. She was cradled like a babe, tucked in someone’s lap, the top of her head notched beneath someone’s chin.

Shai.

It could only be Shai.

No one else ever held her like this. Touched her like this.

No one smelled and felt and sounded like this.

It had to bereal.

So, she gathered all of her courage and drew in a deep breath to brace herself. Her eyelashes fluttered and lifted, fluttered and lifted, as if she was battling within herself to make her body obey her.

Finally, she opened her eyes and stared into the face that haunted all of her thoughts and prayers. So beautiful and dear, tears of gladness gathered and leaked down her cheeks.

“Hello, Heba,” he whispered softly, his breath mingling with her own, his warmth surrounding her.

“Hello, Shai,” she whispered back, not trusting her voice yet, barely able to catch her breath.

“You waited,” he said.

“You came,” she returned.

“I will never leave you again,” he vowed.

Her hands tightened on his face, then clawed into his thick, wavy hair.

“I will never let you,” she growled with the commanding tone of a once mighty Pharoah.

He sighed in surrender, laying himself at her metaphorical feet. He rested his forehead upon hers and simply breathed her in.

“My Shadow. My love,” she murmured, her thumbs rubbing over his too sharp cheeks.

“If ever we are parted, I will not wait. I will hunt you down and lock you up, never to leave my side again.”

A silent rumble shook through his chest, and she knew that he was laughing at her in that annoyingly addictive manly way of his.

“You are very possessive, little cat,” he observed, though it did not sound like an admonishment.

In fact, his voice was full of pride.

“Only of you,” she said, pulling his face closer.

“Now kiss me like you mean it. Make this real. Make me feel it. Believe it.”

“Make me yours forever.”
