“I know,” Ben said easily.

“You’ve had plenty of opportunity if you wanted to. But I noticed that you keep mostly to yourself. I haven’t ever seen you in town, only out here.”

That’s because Michael was in his other forms in town. As Eve and Ruth.

Ben saw Eve plenty at the diner given how often he went in there with his friends and family. He just didn’t know it.

But Michael made himself a reminder that he’d make some appearances in this form too around town, so people didn’t get suspicious.

Ben was sharper than most.

“Don’t like people,” he said again.

Then added, “Mostly.”

They gathered more wood and started the short trek back.

“Not even a pretty girl has caught your eye?” Ben asked, clearly amused.

Why was he so chatty? Michael was growing increasingly uncomfortable, like he was a bug under a microscope.

“Don’t like girls.”

“Boys, then,” Ben said easily.

Frustrated and out of patience, it was Michael who stopped this time. In his annoyed state, he looked directly up into Ben’s eyes and turned this interrogation around.

“What about you? Never seen you with a woman or a man on your arm. You’re what? Thirty hu—”

Michael just caught himself before he said “human years.”

He amended, “—years old? Older than me. That’s pretty old to be single around here, isn’t it? Everyone else around you are paired off. What’s keeping you?”

“Twenty-eight,” Ben muttered.

“Almost thirty,” Michael insisted.

Ben’s gaze was intense as he stared down at Michael. But then, Michael didn’t think Ben’s gaze was evernotintense.

“Haven’t found the right one,” he said gruffly, his voice low and deep.

“If social media is to be believed, you’re kinda old to be a blushing virgin,” Michael poked.

“I don’t blush,” Ben retorted.

But he didn’t say he wasn’t a virgin.

Interesting.

This was why Benjamin D’Angelo, beautiful, godly human, was so very interesting.

“Bet the right person could make you,” Michael snapped back.

And right before his consternated, fascinated eyes, a slow flush crawled up from Ben’s exposed chest to his throat, all the way into the sharp blades of his cheekbones.

It was Ben’s turn to grunt this time as he broke their gaze and started walking again.

They made one more trip before they settled down at the kitchen table with the rest of the family for a hearty breakfast.
