Ben didn’t meet his eyes again even though, with a surge of inexplicable boldness, Michael kept seeking his.

In fact, he stared pointedly at Ben throughout the meal, not caring who noticed.

And he was terribly intrigued by the fact that the subtle blush stayed just beneath Ben’s skin.

This was how Michaelfell.

It’s Time toLive

The roars of dragons and other animal spirits echoed throughout the mountain range and valleys, both from the ground below and the skies above.

Heba sat alongside Sin and Ben on top of a grassy cliff watching the spectacle with awestruck eyes.

Sorin was tangling with the dragons and raptors amongst the clouds, and Eir was riding a slow-moving Kai on the fields below. It looked like Kai was munching on a particular kind of flowering plant while Eir was kicking his sides, trying to get him to engage in the mock battles.

Heba would never get used to seeing such magnificent, fantastical creatures. Never stop admiring one in particular:

A sea glass dragon with beautiful, shimmering wings and scales that blended into the landscape itself, reflecting blues, whites and greens. A dragon with burning, golden eyes as bright as the sun.

Helplessly, she sighed.

Sin, in giant liger form, snorted next to her, rolling his eyes.

She didn’t mind. She didn’t even point out to him that his own gaze tracked a gunmetal gray dragon obsessively wherever Zai went. She could relate and empathize.

It seemed counterintuitive, but the more time she spent Mated to Shai, the more possessive and addicted she became. She wondered if all dragon Mates felt the same.

“Ere is out of formation, the rebel without a cause,” Ben muttered beneath his breath.

“He’s the biggest, strongest in dragon form. He needs to learn discipline and lead the flight the right way.”

You speak as if you know how to do it, Heba pointed out, curious.

It was glorious to be able to communicate to the animal spirits telepathically. She realized she had this ability almost right away as Shai’s Mate.

Conveniently, it also enabled her to speak with and understand others without learning English, which was the common tongue. It would still take her some time to learn that.

She had a natural affinity with languages, however. It had always been a strength. So, she studied with gusto, and in just a few weeks, she was already on to verb conjugations.

But you are not dragon, she said to Ben.You also do not have military training, do you?

“Combat training, yes,” Ben replied, unoffended by her probing.

He was the only human Heba knew who could understand all of them. And somehow, though he usually spoke out loud in English, they all understood him too.

“I was taught by one of the best military strategists and warriors in history, who is also a freaking amazing dragon himself—Cloud Drako. Or he used to be, before the Jade Emperor removed hischimu.”

Ben stroked a hand haphazardly through his longish hair, pulling it back from his face.

It looked like someone recently chopped a few inches off. Because the ends curled and the length itself waved, the unevenness of the cut wasn’t too obvious.

Heba rather suspected that he took a scissors and did it himself, since he had no partner to do it for him and eschewed going to a “salon.”

She wondered why Ben didn’t have a partner of his own.
