It’s as if the JE had sent him on a quest after all. Except, he never left his own time.

He had to find the Secret Gift. It must have something to do with Hatshepsut’s reign. There must be an earth-born dragon involved…

He just didn’t know how all the pieces fit together.

“You are exhausted, Benjamin,” the Consul remarked, sympathy in his voice.

“Get some sleep. And may I suggest—if you have the time and resources, do some primary research in Hatshepsut’s homeland. You have always enjoyed these adventures. When was the last time you traveled?”

“To the Dark Ages—”

“That wasn’t part of a time travel excursion engineered by the Jade Emperor,” Seth inserted.

Ben huffed and smiled wryly.

He hadn’t told many people about his time-travel quests at the Jade Emperor’s behest. But he was almost certain Ere did. His nearest and dearest Immortals were a close-knit clan, despite the distinct divide that still existed between Pure and Dark Ones at large. Stories had a way of getting around.

“Not since the time I went with Sophia, my parents, Ere, Aella and Cloud to Asia Minor,” he replied.

“That was a blast. Even the epic battle at the end. Maybe especially the epic battle at the end. It was the first and only time I saw Cloud in dragon form.”

“Then, perhaps you are due for another trip,” Seth said. “If nothing else, to have some time to yourself in an exotic, faraway place.”

Ben thought that was a great idea.

He ended the video call with Seth after the usual pleasantries and checking on his friends at the Cove and Shield, including Jade Cicada’s new Hive, which Seth straddled as both her personal Consul as well as her Consort and Blooded Mate.

A Pure One in a vampire colony… Seth certainly possessed ironclad balls.

When Ben prepared a light duffle the next day to embark on his solo trip, Ere literally blew in his front door with Sorin in tow.

“Where ya off to, padawan?” his “uncle” chirped, watching him pack while snacking on an apple he stole from Ben’s fruit bowl.

“Don’t you know how to knock?” Ben quipped.

“Why? The door was open.”

“It was unlocked. Not open.”

“Why don’t you lock it?” Ere henpecked. “You shouldn’t take this neighborhood’s safety for granted, Benjamin!”

Ben arched a brow at the annoying dragon.

“With two vampire warriors, a Dark Princess, andtheGeneral of the Pure Ones right next door, you think I need to be concerned about safety?”

Ere shrugged.

“Better safe than sorry. So, where ya off to?” he asked again, gnawing on Ben’s patience like a dog with a bone.

“Egypt.”

He zipped up his duffle and settled it on the kitchen counter, leveling a look at Ere.

“Why are you here again?”

“Had a feeling.”

Ben maintained the same expression, which urged Ere to continue speaking.
