This was no different, in the most basic sense. In the sense that she needed an heir, and this man possessed the seed she sought.

But that was all. There were no other similarities.

By her own definition, her husband was barely a man. Aside from his dangly bits, there was nothing else masculine to commend him.

On the other hand, Shai wasallman.

He was the very epitome of masculinity.Maleness. No one else would define everything worthy of the sex better than him. In Heba’s mind, he would always be the benchmark, and she would find all others wanting.

“Taking” this man was another matter altogether. She didn’t know how to begin.

Perhaps he sensed her quandary and indecision, for he commanded:

“Take off your clothes.”

That was another thing—his commands.

This whole night hadn’t gone even a little bit how she thought it would go in her head when she determined to trust Shai with her plans.

She hadn’t expected him to use such familiarity with her. To speak to her as an equal. To make demands of his own.

What did shethinkhe would do? Simply say “yes,” lie back and allow her to mount his body?

Well, she chewed on the inside of her cheek, she rather did think that’s what he’d do.

The man she propositioned in her mind was a loyal slave who’d always been there for her. As reliable as the sun and the moon. He never questioned her. Never spoke unless spoken to. He did his duty by her without fail.

He was arolemore than a flesh and blood human being.

This was themanshe bargained with.

This wasShai.

Strangely, it was easy to do his bidding. Nothing inside of her chafed at his commands, despite their positions outside this bedchamber. Despite their roles in life.

Heba had always believed herself to be any man’s equal, including the Pharoah. And, as the Pharoah was the zenith of the Egyptian societal pyramid, she always knew her place at the very top.

Papa said she’d always been extremely independent and stubborn. She knew her mind and never bowed to others. She was open to counsel and advice, but she made her own decisions.

Now, she was letting Shai lead her. Letting him set terms and tell her what to do.

It was… freeing, in a way.

Shewantedto follow his lead. She wanted to please him.

She’d only felt a similar respect with Papa. She’d wanted to please him too, as a daughter made proud a father and king who never commanded it, but rather deserved it by virtue of his own greatness.

She wanted to please Shai in similar ways. But fundamentally as a woman. Not because he commanded it, but because he deserved it. Because he was the sort of man who deserved only the best.

Wordlessly, she opened the laces of her tunic, shrugged it off. Then, she removed the thin shift beneath, and the light wrapper around her hips that covered her femininity.

Meanwhile, he removed his clothing as well, until he stood before her in only the cage enclosing his man parts.

Over the years, she secretly had artisans create more comfortable cages, made of the most breathable, flexible, finest materials. Silks and fibers that conformed to his flesh, expanding and stretching as needed.

It was a small thing, but she couldn’t bear the thought of him hurting. She still recalled vividly the effect of the metal cages on his tender flesh. He never complained, simply bearing the pain. But she vowed to do better for him.

He was hers, after all. Her Gift. It was her duty to take care of him.
