“You want me to fuck you?”

He ground his hips subtly against her, pushing his rock-hard erection into her softness.

“Is there need for a spare this time for your heir?” he hissed with a bitterness he could not contain.

“N-n-no—”

“Thenwhy, Heba? Do your elegant lovers not satisfy you? Do you crave a low-born brute instead?”

“What?” she finally barked, jerking her head back to look at him.

Small palms planted themselves upon his pecs and pushed, though he budged not an inch. She didn’t have the strength to move him if he didn’t want to move.

“What are you talking about? I never—”

“The court is buzzing with rumors of how you take a different lover every day,” he spat, loathe to repeat the vile words, but he couldn’t seem to stop himself.

His insides burned and twisted as he said them, but he needed to get them out. The pain had been festering for so long; the hurt ran too deep.

“Isn’t that why you sent me away? Why you push me to ‘go out and explore.’ And now you’re stuck on a ship without your toys. Are you certain you wouldn’t want one of my guards instead? I am sure if you asked nicely it can be arrang—”

Crack!

Shai barely felt the sharp slap against his cheek. It didn’t move him, and it wouldn’t leave a mark. He had thicker skin than that.

And the pain deep within him, constantly churning and gnawing at his organs because of this hopeless desire, this impossible need, numbed him to everything else.

She was making this trip to establish trade with a rich, fertile land, true enough. But she might also return with a new husband.

What was he then?

Nothing. No one.

A lover to discard at will when she’d gotten her fill, if not a slave or a whore. Or someone she kept on the side in secret?

He barely survived her marriage to Thutmose, feeling what he felt. What if she loved her new husband? What if—

“I do not deserve your derision.”

Her low yet forceful words brought his focus back on her.

“You, better than most, would know about Palace rumors. They are just that—rumors.”

She stared fiercely up at him and said:

“I tell you now—I have only had two men in my bed. One, to whom I was married, whom I never wanted and merely suffered because of my duty to this kingdom. And the other, who used to be my slave, whom I have always wanted and craved and wished for.”

He clenched his jaw as he listened.

Andheard.

Beyond the jumbled confusion of his own thoughts, he heard what she had to say.

“He did me a great service risking his own life,” she said more calmly now, her voice soft.

“But even without that, he is the only man I have ever wanted to share my body with. And I am asking him—begginghim—to see beyond his pride, to see me as a woman standing before a man, and tell me whether there is the remotest possibility that he could want me too.”

Unbidden, his hands reached out to cup her face, cradling the back of her head fully within his palms.
