“Heba…” Shai said, his voice coming to her as if from a distance.

“Stop it.”

He gave her a none-too gentle shake. This was not the time for gentleness, it seemed. She was quite beyond responding to that.

“What is wrong with you?” His voice held concern and confusion, the tidal wave of his earlier fury subsiding.

“Are you hurt somewhere? Tell me what is wrong.”

“I-I-”

She gulped and choked on her own spit, trying to form coherent words, her tongue tripping on her mind’s commands.

“I-I-hatethose women! I hate you with those women! I-I-want tobethose women! I want you to o-only see ME!”

She pounded a fist against her chest with impassioned emphasis.

“Me! Only I get t-to touch you! A-and hold your hand. And kiss you. And dance with you. A-andeverythingwith you! Only me!”

He was holding her together with his hands gripping her upper arms, for she was shaking with both fury and fear, both desperation and madness. Shaking like a palm leaf in a sandstorm.

“Heba—”

“Iwant to m-marry you!Iwant to be your woman! ME!” she screeched like a madwoman.

“Iwant to be the one you come h-home to at night. The one y-you hold tight. The one you fuck against the wall and make love to on the bed. ME!”

He tried to pull her into him, to hug her tight, but she refused to concede. She was on a tear and she wouldn’t be stopped.

“Iwant to have your children, a d-dozen of them at least. I-I-want to raise them with you, a-and grow old with you. I want to be buried together. Journey to the Afterlife together. Live out eternity in the Field of Reeds.Together!”

Beyond the watery curtain of her unending tears, he seemed to waver before her eyes. His chest was heaving, his breaths coming in deep gusts, as if she had swept him into her emotional hurricane and he was being tossed about like a rudderless ship.

“Heba…” he rasped.

But she wasn’t done.

“Because Iloveyou! I love you more thananything! More thaneverything!I don’t even know what love is, but I know I do! I love youmorethan love! Love is not enough. Doesn’t come close to what I feel. And I want you to be mine and no one else’s!MINE!”

She gulped a breath to continue her tirade, coming back to where she started, ready to repeat the refrain as many times as she needed to.

The words had to get out. They’d been locked up far too long.

“And I HATE those women! I hate that theytouchedyou! Looked at you! I want to claw out their eyes and chop off their hands! I want—”

Her words were cut off when he smashed her into his chest like a ragdoll with the iron bar of his arm around her waist, and a forceful hand on the back of her head. He kissed her hard, devoured her mouth, owned it with his claiming tongue.

Distantly, she worried she was getting her slobber all over him. She was not at all attractive at the moment.

But her body overruled her mind, cut off her thoughts, and simply made herfeel.

And all she felt wasShai.

In her arms. Beneath her skin. Surrounding her with his heavenly scent and heat.

Her senses came alive and blazed to a roaring inferno, reducing her fear and panic to ashes. She climbed his body until her legs were wrapped around his hips, her core notched against his hardness, her mouth sucking on his plundering tongue.

She went on the offensive and gave him no quarter. Made him stagger back against the trunk of the tree, though he never loosened his hold on her.
