“Take the next couple of days off, and then rest on the weekend. It takes a while to reset your biological clock if you get into an insomnia rut. My ex-husband had that problem, so I know all about it.”

As Eve trudged upstairs, she marveled at what Maddie said.

It was hard to imagine that the human, now immortal, woman, the Mate of the Tiger King, Goya, used to have another man in her life. Or maybe even men. Eve didn’t ask.

She wondered what their story was, how an average human like Maddie (adorable though she was in her own average ways) could attract a primal male like a King of Beasts.

But, well, Eve didn’t like to ask people personal questions. It opened the door for others to ask her the same. And she wasn’t really great at lying, because she could never recall what she said.

After watching countless lives unfold through the Mirror Pond, after existing for tens of thousands of years, it all blended together. Moreover, her three forms, Eve, Michael and Ruth, didn’t look like they lived very interesting lives compared to all of the beings Seventh Sister had come across in her immortality.

She read the instructions on the bottle for how many pills to take and when, took two with a glass of water and lay flat on her bed, closing her eyes.

Before long, she was fast asleep. The dreams came to her immediately, but this time the images were blurrier, less clear, as if she was looking through a haze. This time, she saw scenes unfold that left her in a cold sweat upon waking, shaking with something akin to heartbreak and despair.

She panicked that she felt these emotions, for she’d never felt them before. She didn’tfeel, period.

She only calmed a little when she realized that they were the Egyptian couple’s emotions, not her own. She’d only picked up on them vicariously.

But just when she breathed out in relief at that realization, the droning in her ears began.

Help them, goddess…

Save them…

Only you can. Only you…

“I’m not a god anymore,” Seventh Sister muttered to her bedroom walls, talking to herself.

“Didn’t you get the memo, whoever you are, that I’m stuck in the human realm as a sucky human now? I have no powers.”

You do…

You know what to do.

Think!

You can save them…

They are important…

The Secret Gift…

Save them!

Seventh Sister pulled a pillow over her face and screamed into it, frustrated and exhausted beyond endurance.

Minutes, perhaps hours, later, when she was once again calm and collected, she got out of bed, made coffee, guzzled it down with her favorite French Vanilla Coffee-mate and began to plan.

“I love your eyes,” Heba sighed, brushing her thumb gently over the top of his eyelids.

“I love your brows, your cheeks, your nose and this generous mouth.”

She touched those features in turn, lingering on his bottom lip.
